Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. Is This What Your Smartphone Will Look Like In 2013? We Hope So We’re all aware that smartphones could potentially replace a lot of the technology we depend on today, but that can’t happen until someone develops some better processors, which is exactly what Qualcomm is claiming to have done. In fact, the chipset maker promises that in the next two years, your smartphone could act as a 3D set-top box, a game console, and a cloud-based computer with way longer battery life than any of us imagined. Sound good? We think so, too. At last week’s Upling conference in ...

Review: T-Mobile G2x (Optimus 2X) Short version: Perhaps the most powerful phone on the market, the G2x is certainly impressive technically, but physically it’s uninspiring, and a lack of compelling HD and gaming content compatible with Android makes its greatest assets (large screen and powerful processor) underwhelming. And where’s my Gingerbread? Features: Dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 processor and 512MB of RAM 4″ 800

Lion will introduce new sharing options in QuickTime X When Apple came out with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, the company unveiled a whole new version of QuickTime Player (and also jumped a couple of version numbers in the process -- going from "7" to "X," or ten). The player component of QuickTime X was much sleeker than QuickTime Player 7, but lacked a lot of the added features that version 7 had (like Play Selection Only, Loop Back and Forth, etc). While it doesn't appear that ...

Japan Sends Team Of 23 Rescue Robots That Withstand Radiation To Fukushima [Update: Videos] Japan’s International Rescue System Institute (IRS) unveiled a new rescue robot that can be used to take over the work from humans in high-radiation areas. Not too surprisingly, the institute announced the remote-controlled machines will be used to scope out the situation in various places at the damaged nuclear power plant in Fukushima. The IRS says the robots can withstand radiation (up to 20 Sv currently) and are also water-proof to a certain extent (driving through puddles, for example, is supposed to be no problem). A team ...

Review: The Nintendo 3DS, The Next Step In Portable Gaming Evolution Nintendo has long defined the rules of childhood. In Nintendo’s world, logic and whimsy are intermixed and there is always a bigger boss and another castle. We learned from Nintendo that you can always turn your enemy’s weapons against them and that evolution is a fact. We learned that the best stories are played out in your head and even when you don’t have a lot of friends you at least always have Mario. Nintendo also defined video gameplay. Their NES console, while seemingly underpowered, sat under ...

Its wing movements and flight motion are extremely realistic, with the SmartBird even turning its head to steer. It is so lightweight that it doesn’t even lifting gas to take off at all. Its advanced mechanisms inside its body allow ...
