Strategic Sharing: Zipcar Leads $13.7M Investment In Campus Car-Sharing Startup Wheelz
February 22, 2012 – 8:25 am | No Comment

Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Detroit-based Fontinalis…

[CES 2010] The LG Rumor Touch was unveiled at CES and we got a quick overview. The successor of the LG Rumor gets now a large 3-inch WQVGA touch screen, a 5 line QWERTY keyboard (before it was 4 line), a 2 MP camera (before it was 1.3 MP) and 3G data capability on Sprint’s Network. The keyboard has a great touch and is very comfortable to use. The new Hello user interface allowing the user to have their favorite contacts on the home screen is cool and the graphic ...

TUAW Tip: Get your animated slideshows to MobileMe For all the things Apple does right, there are some strange decisions in the integration of iPhoto and MobileMe. iPhoto has a wonderful way to create animated slideshows with music and professional looking transitions and you can look at them all day on your Mac, or send them to your iPhone or AppleTV. But things get ugly when you want to post them on the web for family and friends using MobileMe. It's baffling, but there is ...

Google Nexus One support page goes live, quickly dies again Wondering how to activate your shiny new Nexus One? Curious how to get started with the thing, or how to use the 3D gallery? Oh, wait, you don't have yours yet? Oops. Google seems to have posted its support page for the phone a little early, a little site that went live for just a few minutes -- just long enough for us to click through a little, read ...
Review: BookEndz Dock For MacBook Pro

Review: BookEndz Dock For MacBook Pro Mac users really haven’t had the chance to use a docking station. Most PC’s come with an option for a docking station but Apple has never followed suit. Third-party manufacturer BookEndz has a suite of docks for Macs ranging from the first generation MacBook, to the PowerBook, all the way to the latest unibody MacBook Pro. Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been playing around with the BookEndz dock for the first generation unibody 15″ MacBook Pro . Overall, the dock is well built. It adds ...
The Hunt For the Perfect Screen [Screens]

The Hunt For the Perfect Screen [Screens] As I stood in the corner of a small, cluttered optics lab at MIT, the professor flipped a switch. The room filled with an electrical buzz, and suddenly a holographic video popped out at my face. The 3-D image was of a human rib cage, and it rotated in midair. And the holographic rib cage rattled me. It was my first experience with a Display Of The Future, and it set me on a mission. In the subsequent years, I've been hunting down display ...

The Engadget Show – 004: The decade in gadgets, with special guest Peter Rojas! What a crazy 10 years, right guys? It's really flown past; the highs, the lows, the stuff in the middle that didn't seem very impressive one way or another. For our final Engadget Show of the decade, we asked site founder Peter Rojas to join us for a look back at our picks for the most important and / or interesting gadget developments since 2000. A hardcore crowd came out just after a gigantic snowstorm to witness the proceedings, and now ...

Basically Every ISP Is Trying to Scare You Into Paying for Internet You Don’t Need [Internet] You thought AT&T was screwing unsuspecting customers into paying obscene bandwidth bills with ridiculous claims of stuff you can't do? Time Warner says you can't have 3 people on the internet without at least 15Mbps. Oh, it gets worse. According to Time Warner, unless you have at least 7Mbps internet, you can't download music, or even "Windows Media Player software." And ...

Another Google Nexus One sighting, this time a wee bit more clear How a phone given to thousands of employees still manages to be nothing more than an occasional blip on the internets continues to boggle our mind. This latest Nexus One / "Google Phone" sighting comes care of two Twitter chatters -- @djrobrob and the less protected account of @phillm. It's the clearest shot of the interface we've gotten, and given our previous go-to videos have been subsequently pulled, the best "motion picture" interpretation we've got ...

Heralded by Nuance as the “fast, accurate, and smart way to search online content on your iPhone”, Dragon Search allows iPhone users to search across Google, Yahoo!, Bing, iTunes, Twitter, Wiki, or YouTube by speaking their search terms. It'll arrive on the PSN and Xbox Live Marketplace on December 17, and the PSP demo will drop on January 7 (January 14 in Europe).
