Strategic Sharing: Zipcar Leads $13.7M Investment In Campus Car-Sharing Startup Wheelz
February 22, 2012 – 8:25 am | No Comment

Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Detroit-based Fontinalis…

Tracks Releases Most Ambitious Update Yet: Custom Camera, New Filters, And Real-Time Video

Tracks Releases Most Ambitious Update Yet: Custom Camera, New Filters, And Real-Time Video How timely. After launching a year ago at Disrupt NYC 2011 , Tracks is today releasing one of its biggest updates to date. The service is much like Color, but without the creepy factor as any and all members of a specific photo-sharing group must be invited. I like to think of it as the place where Color and Google+ Circles intersect, but I far prefer Tracks than either of the former. Thus far Tracks has offered iOS , web- and real-world versions of your tracks (the ...

How Kik Survived The Group Messaging Wars And Built A Sweet Mobile App For Controlling TVs If a consumer mobile fad comes and goes, and you don’t play consolidation musical chairs, what do you do next? This is kind of what happened to Kik, a Canadian startup that took off with the explosive growth of its messaging app last year. Amid the hype around messaging, Kik raised $8 million in funding from RRE Ventures, Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures . Not too long after, Kik’s rivals Beluga and GroupMe got acquired in some respectable (but not crazy huge) deals by Facebook and ...
The Meh-Too Crowd

The Meh-Too Crowd It’s been a while since I came to Google’s defense but I think it’s time to talk about what an absolute downer it is to dig through a lot of tech commentary these days. The most recent example came after the launch of Google’s Glass project, a HUD for future travelers that will let us connect to our world in a fairly non-obtrusive way. Arguably, the product is pretty pie-in-the-sky, but all things being equal, the potential device, even if it includes a small subset of the ...

HTC Media Link HD display mirroring box gets FCC rubber stamp Amid the rush of news during HTC's presentation at MWC was a brief mention of a Media Link HD accessory for wireless big-screen mirroring from the One S or One X. Fresh FCC paperwork suggests the device is on track for an April release and also highlights that it's been revised since HTC's first foible-prone attempt at a DLNA dongle: the ...

Three Free Healthcare Apps That Empower Patients Editor’s Note: Iltifat Husain is the founder and Editor-in-chief of iMedicalApps.com , a physician-operated technology review publication and is currently an Emergency Medicine resident physician at Wake Forest University’s School of Medicine. The significant adoption of smartphones among physicians has not only led to an explosion of medical apps aimed at healthcare providers, but it has also cultivated an emerging trend of health and wellness apps aimed at empowering patients. While great innovation is happening in the health and wellness mobile ecosystem, it’s difficult for patients and ...

Clik: Google’s Broken App Search Means We’re Invisible On Android A little more than a week ago, the Clik smartphone app launched , resulting plenty of press coverage and more than 100,000 downloads on iOS (at least according to Clik). But there was one area where the launch fizzled — in the Android Market, where the Clik app is apparently invisible to searches. “Over the weekend, as we get all this hype, nobody could find our app,” says CEO Ted Livingston. Even today, if you search for “clik” in the Market, the app doesn’t show up in ...
