[Image via The Stub ] If you’ve been avidly following the Hollywood scuttlebutt this past week, you’ve probably heard of an event which is unfolding at this very moment: The 82nd Annual Academy Awards. We know how badly you guys want to be able to talk about the Oscars whilst chatting over your place of business’ water cooler, coffee pot or rodeo clown make-up station, so we’re here to help you understand the Awards ceremony in terms you’ll find easily understandable: The Oscars are the Spike TV Video Game Awards, but for movies. The similarities between the two events really are pretty striking — the awkward presentation by the cast of the Jersey Shore and Mike Tyson will surely be paralleled by the Oscars’ pairing of Young Starlet A and Lecherous Old Comedian B. While the VGAs have scantily-clad, off-season Victoria’s Secret models hand out their awards, the Oscars assign that task to off-season actors , who spend a majority of their on-stage time wondering whether or not this will be the closest they’ll ever come to holding…

Goodbye, CrunchGear.
March 12, 2010 – 3:13 pm | No Comment
Goodbye, CrunchGear. Hello John Biggs - I would like to be the CrunchGear intern. At 28 years of age I’d probably be the oldest, creepiest intern that CrunchGear has ever hired. That being said, I don’t look a day past 26. I should also tell you that I’m taller than most people so I would be good at seeing over smaller, scrawnier geeks at trade shows. Although since I’m so old, I’d probably get tired at around noon. Those words began the e-mail I sent on May 31st, 2007, ...

Panasonic Lumix DMC-G2 and G10 Micro Four Thirds Cameras: G2 Gets Touchscreen Control, Both Get HD Video [Microfourthirds] Panasonic has pulled the sheets off two new Lumix Micro Four Thirds cameras: the touchscreen DMC-G2 and the super light G10. Both shoot 720p video, but the G2's bendy, touch control screen makes it a Micro Four Thirds stand out. The DMC-G2 is the direct descendant of the Lumix G1, the first ever Micro Four Thirds camera. It has a 12.1MP Live MOS ...

FirstView’s $95 Android / Windows CE PC607V tips a craptablet iceberg at CeBIT Doesn't look too bad for a $95 Android tablet, huh? Well, there's plenty more where that came from. Scattered along the main halls of CeBIT are dozens of Chinese and Taiwanese consumer electronics resellers looking to sell products to new customers, and this year they sure loaded up the suitcases with cheap Android / Windows CE tablets. For the most part all these tablets (or small smartbooks) have ARM 9 or 11 processors and 5 to 7-inch resistive touch displays. While ...

How Apple and Google Fell Out of Love [Apple-google War]
March 2, 2010 – 2:58 pm | No Comment
How Apple and Google Fell Out of Love [Apple-google War] Apple has sued Google's phone manufacturer for infringing on 20 iPhone patents. Not so long ago, Apple and Google were a nice couple. Then, everything went to hell. The romance began with the iPhone, even while we didn't know about it in 2006. Back then, Steve Jobs invited Google's CEO Eric Schmidt to his house, to sit at his table, and have vanilla-frosted cupcakes and tea together. It was instant love. An Affair to Remember They happily worked in ...

webOS 1.4 now available for the Palm Pre and Pixi on Sprint, O2, Movistar, but not Verizon Good news, Palm fans! If you’ve taken a break from jamming on the “Update” button, it’s time to go tap it one last time: the rollout of webOS 1.4 has just begun. The catch: it seems that it’s only for Sprint handsets right now ( Update: In the US, that is – it’s also available on O2 UK, O2 Germany, O2 Ireland, and Movistar in Europe), with the Verizon Pre Plus and Pixi Plus still reporting that 1.3 is the latest release. We knew it was coming ...
RoboCar G: Japanese venture to sell electric robot car (videos)
February 26, 2010 – 12:44 pm | No Comment
RoboCar G: Japanese venture to sell electric robot car (videos) We covered various products from Tokyo-based robotics venture ZMP in the past , including a mini robo car , but we never had the chance to blog about an actual robot car (from any company actually). Granted, it’s just a one-seater and not really “robotic”, but the so-called RoboCar G [JP], which is an electric vehicle, doesn’t look too bad and might be the beginning of a new trend. The car will initially be offered to research institutions, which can go for extras like a laser range ...
Macworld Expo: Jim Rea talks about the early days of Mac development
February 18, 2010 – 7:45 am | No Comment
Macworld Expo: Jim Rea talks about the early days of Mac development When Apple first introduced the Macintosh, there weren't many authorized third-party developers around... even fewer unauthorized ones, when you think about it. One guy did manage to sneak in the back door and ship his app for the original Mac on an accelerated schedule: Jim Rea, the founder of ProVUE Development. The company's original database for the Mac, OverVUE, was the 2nd commercial app to ship for the platform (Microsoft's Multiplan was #1). The DB application later evolved ...

Windows Phone 7 Series: Everything Is Different Now [Windows Phone 7] It's astounding that until this moment, three years after the iPhone, the biggest software company in the world basically didn't compete in mobile. Windows Phone 7 Series is more than the Microsoft smartphone we've been waiting for. Everything's different now. Today, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft is publicly previewing Windows Phone 7 for the first time. The brand new, ...
