Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Motorola wins permanent injunction against Apple’s iCloud in German court There's another legal brouhaha brewing in Germany, where Motorola today won an injunction against Apple's iCloud. In a decision handed down from the infamous Mannheim Regional Court this morning, Judge Andreas Voss issued a permanent injunction against Cupertino's cloud-based service and any devices that use it, following a complaint that Motorola originally filed in April of last year. The two companies, as you may recall, have been going at each other rather aggressively in Germany, where Motorola ...
Droid RAZR MAXX To Launch On January 26th?

Droid RAZR MAXX To Launch On January 26th? While there wasn’t much to say about the recently announced Droid RAZR MAXX to begin with (it’s essentially the Droid RAZR with a bigger battery and more storage ), Motorola and Verizon decided to leave out one key bit of detail: the launch date. While it’s still not 100% confirmed, Motorola’s own RAZR MAXX product page now pinpoints the big day as January 26th. Don’t go lining up outside of the Verizon store on the 26th or anything (this could very well be a placeholder, or a ...

Engadget Mobile Podcast 121: CES 2012 – 01.12.2012 This was the QVC edition of the Engadget Mobile Podcast, featuring full-on hand modeling by Brad and some really nice close-ups of the new halo devices of CES 2012. A forklift also abducted Myriam. You won't see that in the audio-only podcast, so use your best fan fiction imagination this time or shoot the video to your media streaming device of choice. All that, plus the triumphant return of the newly Fu Manchu'd Sean Cooper. Zing! Video after ...
Verizon Cuts $50 Off The Droid Xyboards On-Contract Price But They’re Still Too Expensive

Verizon Cuts $50 Off The Droid Xyboards On-Contract Price But They’re Still Too Expensive It seems that Verizon (or Motorola) got the message: The Droid Xyboards are too damn expensive when tied to a 2-year commitment. Until today, Verizon was selling the 10.1 Xoom 2 for $529 and required a 2-year contract. Ludicrous. Well, after today’s price cuts, the prices are less absurd, but just slightly. Verizon lopped $50 off the on-contract price making the 16GB 10.1-inch $479 with the 8-inch retailing just $379. Of course buyers are still required to sign on the dotted line in order to get that ...
Does Microsoft Really Need A Windows Superphone?

Does Microsoft Really Need A Windows Superphone? A leaked Windows Phone roadmap made the rounds earlier today, and if its contents hold true, then Microsoft will be going big on hardware when it comes time for Windows Phone Apollo to take the stage. Even though the budget-friendly Tango update will hit devices first, Microsoft has apparently made the development of “superphones” a priority for next year. One of the things that I really enjoy about Windows Phone is that it doesn’t need the latest-and-greatest hardware in order to give users a consistently smooth experience. ...

Rooted MotoACTV Brings Web Browsing And Angry Birds To Your Wrist Fitness watches are one thing, but how about a fitness watch that lets you play a few levels of Angry Birds in between wind sprints? Motorola’s MotoACTV debuted alongside the Droid RAZR not too long ago, and one developer has finally taken it upon itself to unleash its full potential. The hack comes courtesy of developer Chris Wade , whose past endeavors include the Dingleberry PlayBook root method and the (ill-fated) iEmu project . While he’s best known for his software projects, he’s quite the hardware buff ...

Mobile Miscellany: week of December 19, 2011 This week was packed with news on the mobile front, so it was easy to miss a few stories here and there. Here's some of the other stuff that happened in the wide world of wireless for the week of December 19, 2011: Motorola Droid 4 delayed until February? According to a memo leaked to VZBuzz, it appears that the Motorola Droid 4 -- the LTE-enabled successor to Verizon's top-tier QWERTY slider -- may be taking too many lessons from the ...
Verizon’s Next DROID RAZR Already Spotted In Their System

Verizon’s Next DROID RAZR Already Spotted In Their System Because the name “Verizon DROID RAZR by Motorola” seemingly isn’t long enough, it looks like Verizon’s already planning another RAZR with even more words in the name . I kid, of course (does the name even matter? Everyone outside of the tech scene just calls every Android phone “the Droid” anyway), but I pick on the name because it’s pretty much the only thing we know at this point. Spotted lurking in VZW’s inventory system by the guys at Droid-Life , it looks like the next handset ...
