Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Skype for Windows Phone beta arriving soon?
February 1, 2012 – 12:56 pm | No Comment
Skype for Windows Phone beta arriving soon? Even though Microsoft acquired Skype quite awhile ago, the Skype app still has yet to make an appearance on Windows Phone. But if reports online turn out to be true, the wait could be almost over. Apparently Microsoft employees have been recently notified that a beta version of Skype for Windows Phone will be released shortly, and invitations will be sent out in the coming weeks. Assuming the rumors are true, it looks like Microsoft employees ...
Dirty Money

Dirty Money The New York Times has published a long article on Foxconn which, while it doesn’t provide much in the way of new information, does act as a sobering reminder of just how companies like Apple can make so very much money. When our own John Biggs visited Foxconn , he focused on the company itself, its scale, its intentions. When I wrote about Apple’s suppliers failing to meet environmental standards , it was more about the laxity of regulators within China. Today’s NYT piece depicts Apple as ...

Bing Brings Postagram To Sundance, Sponsors Postcards For The Movie Stars Postagram , the mobile app from Sincerely that lets you create and mail real-life postcards from your phone photos, has worked out a clever real-world integration with Bing for the Sundance film festival this weekend. A street team is wandering the snowy roads of Park City, Utah, taking photos of attendees, collecting their addresses, and mailing them Bing-sponsored postcards. “Your mailbox has a few bills in it, and other boring stuff like that. The thing that’s going to stick out is when you get a card with ...
Samsung Not Sold On The Bada-Tizen Merger Just Yet

Samsung Not Sold On The Bada-Tizen Merger Just Yet I’ve long wondered what exactly Samsung would do with their homegrown Bada operating system, and for a little while there the answer seemed clear — Samsung SVP Tae-jin Kang recently noted that Bada would be merged with the Intel-backed Tizen OS project . In fact, he said at CES that the work to combine both platforms had already begun, which seemed like a pretty definitive conclusion for Bada. Now it seems like Samsung may be having second thoughts about the whole process. Samsung representatives have reached out ...

The Samsung Note Is Definitively Not Coming To AT&T As Far As You Know

The Samsung Note Is Definitively Not Coming To AT&T As Far As You Know Remember the mini-slate Samsung released a few months ago? The Samsung Galaxy Note? Pretty cool little device. As we enter CES week , the press releases are flying fast and furious and this one caught my eye. It’s for a small company that makes accessories for gadgets and I suppose (I can’t find the original) it outlined Anymode’s plans for Samsung Note accessories. The release also noted that the Samsung Note would hit AT&T this year . There were rumors of this, but Anymode essentially confirmed it. ...
Nintendo tells developers not to share digital sales numbers

Nintendo tells developers not to share digital sales numbers Richard Hill-Whittall is the owner and director of Icon Games Entertainment, and his company has released several games in the last year for various platforms, including WiiWare. He recently shared some sales numbers over on Gamasutra, but was asked by Nintendo to take the numbers for its platforms down. According to Hill-Whittall, Nintendo doesn't allow developers to share digital sales numbers for self-published WiiWare and downloadable DS titles. That's an interesting tack to take, and Hill-Whittall argues ...
Microsoft, OEMs Pledging $200 Million For Windows Phone Marketing Push

Microsoft, OEMs Pledging $200 Million For Windows Phone Marketing Push If you’re not a Windows fan, then these next few months may not be too pleasant for you. WinSupersite’s Paul Thurrott reports that Microsoft and OEM friends like Nokia and Samsung will be spending around $200 million in order give Windows Phone a big U.S. marketing push in early 2012. It’s quite a handsome sum, but the platform is in dire need of a shot in the arm. While the platform is picking up steam when it comes to app submissions, comScore’s most recent report shows that ...
Eldar Murtazin gives RIM six months to win back customers, says Nokia is selling its soul to Microsoft
January 3, 2012 – 12:18 pm | No Comment
Eldar Murtazin gives RIM six months to win back customers, says Nokia is selling its soul to Microsoft Murtazin is a guy well known for scoring handsets way ahead of even their debut showing. He also has an uncanny knack of knowing exactly what mobile companies are plotting -- sometimes. He's a guy worth listening to, especially for his often outspoken views on company failings. In his latest (lengthy) editorial, Eldar Murtazin takes umbrage with two companies that have weathered a tricky 2011; RIM and Nokia. He reckons that the ...
Does Microsoft Really Need A Windows Superphone?
December 29, 2011 – 12:58 am | No Comment
Does Microsoft Really Need A Windows Superphone? A leaked Windows Phone roadmap made the rounds earlier today, and if its contents hold true, then Microsoft will be going big on hardware when it comes time for Windows Phone Apollo to take the stage. Even though the budget-friendly Tango update will hit devices first, Microsoft has apparently made the development of “superphones” a priority for next year. One of the things that I really enjoy about Windows Phone is that it doesn’t need the latest-and-greatest hardware in order to give users a consistently smooth experience. ...
