Strategic Sharing: Zipcar Leads $13.7M Investment In Campus Car-Sharing Startup Wheelz
February 22, 2012 – 8:25 am | No Comment

Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Detroit-based Fontinalis…

Switched On: Extra Sensory Perception
March 18, 2012 – 4:01 pm | No Comment
Switched On: Extra Sensory Perception Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology. At Intel's CES 2012 press conference, the giant chipmaker justified calling thin notebook PCs "ultrabooks" by noting how the devices would increasingly be characterized by more than their thinness. The integration of sensors has become so core to the modern smartphone experience that their absence would make using such devices untenable. Most of that differentiation was based on plans to integrate ...

Sandy Bridge E squashed into $3,000 Clevo P270WM gaming suitcase If you thought Intel's super-charged Core i7 CPUs were only for desktops, then AVADirect reckons it can change your mind. The company's Clevo P270WM notebook comes strapped to the back of either a six-core i7-3930K or an over-sized i7-3960X, while still leaving plenty of room for dual GeForce GTX 580M graphics, a Bigfoot Killer WiFi adapter, three hard drives and four memory slots offering up to 32GB of RAM. Topping it all off is a 3D-capable 17.3-inch ...
Samsung Not Sold On The Bada-Tizen Merger Just Yet

Samsung Not Sold On The Bada-Tizen Merger Just Yet I’ve long wondered what exactly Samsung would do with their homegrown Bada operating system, and for a little while there the answer seemed clear — Samsung SVP Tae-jin Kang recently noted that Bada would be merged with the Intel-backed Tizen OS project . In fact, he said at CES that the work to combine both platforms had already begun, which seemed like a pretty definitive conclusion for Bada. Now it seems like Samsung may be having second thoughts about the whole process. Samsung representatives have reached out ...
Stop! It’s A Really Bad Time To Buy Most Gadgets!

Stop! It’s A Really Bad Time To Buy Most Gadgets! Did you know that your brain releases dopamine when it processes something new? At least that’s what the Internet told me . Apparently dopamine is key in establishing a craving, which could be why ever-updating sites like blogs or Reddit are so popular. There is always something new. It could also be why some people always crave more gadgets. You’re bored with your Galaxy SII and hope the Galaxy Nexus will satisfy that burning desire, which it probably will ( unless you’re MG ). But don’t do ...

Android Medfield tablet caught in the wild We all know that Intel plans to enter the smartphone and tablet market sometime in 2012 with the release of its new Atom chip codenamed Medfield. We’ve all seen the render of the Medfield phone before, so if you’ve ever wondered how Intel’s Medfield-powered tablets would look like, you’re in luck. The folks over at Android Community managed to get their hands on a Medfield developer tablet that was shown off ...

T-Platforms to build ten petaflop supercomputer for Moscow State University In post-Soviet Russia, massive supercomputer programs you. (Sorry, we had to.) Recently, Russia's Moscow State University contracted with high-performance computing company T-Platforms to create a ten petaflop cluster that'll be operational in 2013. The computer would fall just short of the fastest supercomputer on Earth (the Japanese K Computer, which is rated at 10.51 petaflops) and will incorporate a mixture of different node types to achieve the ten petaflops. T-Platforms will reportedly build the nodes from Sandy Bridge ...

Intel springs another leak, mobile Ivy Bridge CPUs abound Just yesterday, we caught a glimpse of what Intel has in store for Ivy Bridge, and it seems those details were but a prelude to a bevy of details that leaked out today. It seems the folks over at VR Zone got their hands on some of Chipzilla's internal documents showing a host of changes for its post-Sandy Bridge mobile CPUs. Apparently, we can expect quite a few new full-power models, including a 2.9GHz Core i7-3920XM -- clocked at 200MHz faster ...

LuvBook S: Japan Gets Super-Cute “Hello Kitty” Laptop We have covered the one or the other Hello Kitty gadget in the past, but it’s been a while since the last notebook featuring the popular cartoon cat. But now Japan’s Mouse Computer is selling the so-called LuvBook S, [JP], an 11.6-inch laptop with Hello Kitty all over it. It has been co-developed with Hello Kitty maker Sanrio and luxury goods maker Swarovski. Swarovski designed the body of the laptop (the Hello Kitty face and heart you see below is made of about 1,100 Swarovski stones): These ...

October 1, 2011 – 12:29 pm | No Comment
The9 Launches Mobile Gaming Platform & SDK To Give Developers Access To The Chinese Market The9 , the sizable NASDAQ-listed Chinese game publisher and developer, has made quite a few investments in the U.S. gaming market over the last year. ( Reflecting, it seems, a rising Asian interest in U.S. companies, especially gaming .) As part of its international strategy, The9 has been full-steam ahead on creating better ways for international gaming companies and developers to make inroads into the Chinese mobile and social gaming markets, which have been traditionally difficult areas for non-Chinese developers to access effectively (and profitably). In May, ...
Nvidia Reveals Kal-El’s Secret Fifth Core For Ultra-Low-Power Tasks

Nvidia Reveals Kal-El’s Secret Fifth Core For Ultra-Low-Power Tasks There has been a lot of whispering about Nvidia’s next-generation Tegra chip, code-named Kal-El (Superman’s Kryptonian name, for the uninitiated), since it was first detailed on a roadmap back in Februrary. But it hasn’t shown up quite yet in any actual handsets or tablets, though we’re told it has been adopted by the majors and will have its debut soon. Nvidia today released some new information about the SoC that confirms Tegra’s status as the brand to beat in the mobile computing world. Turns out it’s not ...
