Strategic Sharing: Zipcar Leads $13.7M Investment In Campus Car-Sharing Startup Wheelz
February 22, 2012 – 8:25 am | No Comment

Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Detroit-based Fontinalis…

RIM Officializes Stance Against Jailbreaking
March 21, 2012 – 7:10 pm | No Comment
RIM Officializes Stance Against Jailbreaking Jailbreaking, a term that has come to encompass several practices but generally refers to a user obtaining root access on their device, is controversial in a strange way. Companies like Apple and Nintendo hate it, and most users don’t care about it. Yet it’s constantly in the news because it is, in fact, a philosophical conflict . RIM has posted an official response to the habit of jailbreaking BlackBerry devices, particularly PlayBooks , though the post doesn’t mention the product by name. Probably because it would be ...

UFO Cookie Jar
February 13, 2012 – 6:30 am | No Comment
UFO Cookie Jar Do not mess with aliens – that is the general mantra, of course. After all, getting an anal probe is not worth it so that you know the existence of aliens, and what happens when you go through all of that to gain the knowledge of aliens for a moment, only to have folks from the Men in Black press that flashing thing in order to erase your memory. Well, having said that, it does seem as though aliens do have ...
RIM’s New Playbook: The CEO Sneak
January 23, 2012 – 4:04 am | No Comment
RIM’s New Playbook: The CEO Sneak It was a big day for football fans, with both the AFC and NFC Championships taking place this afternoon and this evening. The games grab more than a few eyeballs every year — last year’s championships grabbed 54.8 million and 51.9 million viewers, respectively . While the numbers aren’t out yet for today’s games, the viewership is expected to be equally as enormous. That’s why so many in the Twittersphere have been so quick to point out that, nestled quietly behind a hotly contested NFC Championship between ...

A forklift also abducted Myriam. You won't see that in the audio-only podcast, so use your best fan fiction imagination this time or shoot the video to your media streaming device of choice. All that, plus the triumphant return of the newly Fu Manchu'd Sean Cooper. Zing! Video after ...
Eldar Murtazin gives RIM six months to win back customers, says Nokia is selling its soul to Microsoft
January 3, 2012 – 12:18 pm | No Comment
Eldar Murtazin gives RIM six months to win back customers, says Nokia is selling its soul to Microsoft Murtazin is a guy well known for scoring handsets way ahead of even their debut showing. He also has an uncanny knack of knowing exactly what mobile companies are plotting -- sometimes. He's a guy worth listening to, especially for his often outspoken views on company failings. In his latest (lengthy) editorial, Eldar Murtazin takes umbrage with two companies that have weathered a tricky 2011; RIM and Nokia. He reckons that the ...
How Best Buy Stole Christmas
December 24, 2011 – 1:33 pm | No Comment
How Best Buy Stole Christmas “I wouldn’t touch you with a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole.” There’s a bit of inherent risk when shopping online. You’re handing over your credit card to a retailer that promises to ship you something in return. Most of the time transactions are completed without issue and orders are fulfilled as promised. Sometimes things go awry, though. And sometimes Best Buy ruins Christmas. Best Buy started reaching out to customers earlier this week — you know, mere days before Christmas — that the retailer was unable to fulfill orders ...
RIM Denies BlackBerry 10 Delay Allegations: Claims Are “Uninformed”
December 22, 2011 – 7:02 pm | No Comment
RIM Denies BlackBerry 10 Delay Allegations: Claims Are “Uninformed” I’ll admit to lobbing a few mortars at RIM (alright, maybe more than a few), but it looks like things may be even worse than expected. BGR reported earlier today that RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis lied about the the reason their first BlackBerry 10 devices would be delayed even later into 2012. Lazaridis said during RIM’s recent earnings call that they were waiting for a specific dual-core LTE chipset to be available before their new BlackBerrys would see the light of day in late 2012. It was ...
