Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Carrier Threats Lead Apple to Abandon Integrated iPhone SIM Plan [Sim] The Telegraph reports today that Apple has scrapped plans for its own brand of SIM card after carriers threatened to stop selling the iPhone. Theoretically, the integrated SIM could have removed carriers from the purchasing process. Sorry consumers! The carriers were unsurprisingly pleased with themselves following the news: A senior source at a mobile operator said: "Apple has long been trying to build closer and closer relationships and cut out ...

Black Flyday is designed for social networking, as it is integrated with Facebook for sharing deals. Apparently, you are supposed to create a team of shoppers and use Flyday to communicate for some crowdsourced deals. Perhaps ...

Casemate’s iPhone 4 Bounce case protects your noodle from inevitable radiation baking As the everlasting debate rages on, and brains continue to / not to melt with every passing phone call, Casemate's taking no chances whatsoever. By collaborating with Pong -- a company that makes its ends by "protecting users of cellular telephones from the potentially harmful effects of radiation exposure" -- the Bounce was born. For all intents and purposes, it's a simplistic form-fitting iPhone 4 case (BlackBerry models are en route), available in a foursome ...

CEOs discuss Apple at Web 2.0 Summit While the Web 2.0 Summit was under way from Nov. 15 through Nov. 17, there were a few inevitable pot shots at Apple from attending chief executive officers. This isn't really a surprise with the ongoing growth of Apple and Apple's overall value, but it's definitely interesting to see what those CEOs felt needed to be said. Shantanu Narayen is the CEO of Adobe Systems, and he told ...

Exclusive: Woz misquoted! ‘Almost every app that I have is better on the iPhone’ Some comments attributed to Steve Wozniak caused quite a kerfuffle this morning -- according to Dutch paper De Telegraaf, Woz said that "Android phones have more features," which would help Google's OS become the dominant smartphone platform. Obviously, a statement like that from Apple's co-founder rocketed around the web, and it's set off yet another round of furious Android-vs-iOS debate. There's just one problem, though: Woz never said anything like that. Turns out Woz is an ...

New Apple patents for iPhone, wide trackpad, Final Cut Pro, and Apple Mail Patently Apple's got a whole slew of new patent applications from Cupertino today. First up are the actual product designs of the original iPhone and the second-gen iPod shuffle. Apple's moved on from both of these designs to newer and better things, but they're putting the patents in anyway, just in case anyone wants to rip off the rounded iPhone edges or the little shuffle's clip design. There are also two MacBook patents: one for the latch holding the battery ...

ASUS Eee Tablet to show up at CES 2011 We have reported on the ASUS Eee Tablet, aka E90 or EeePad. It was unveiled at Computex in June, and there hasn’t been much on it since then. We know that it has 2,450 dpi touchscreen sensitivity and quick 0.1 second page turns. I also believe that it was supposed to come out sometime earlier, but it will probably not show up until 2011. That means it will ...
