Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Rumor: Evidence for a Castle in the ‘iCloud’ for Lion French blog Consomac sent us a heads-up that they've done a bit of digging in the current developer preview, searching for further evidence of the suggested Find My Mac feature in Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and the fabled iCloud domain name. What they found was fascinating. In searching through Lion's strings for references to Find My Mac, iCloud or MobileMe, they came up with the localized strings seen in the image: "Complete ...

Desk Phone Dock review With every passing day, more people are ditching their landlines in favor of using their cellular phones as a combination device. Smartphones are no doubt excellent means of contacting other humans and managing our lives, but some of us miss the simpler days -- when a phone was just a phone. If you're a proud owner of an iPhone but looking to head down the retro road, Kee Utility would like to point you in the right direction. ...

webOS Developers Rejoice! The App Catalog Gets A Promo Code System If you’re an app developer in the mobile world, promo codes (that is, one-time use codes redeemable for a free copy of your app) are amongst the most important tools you can have in your marketing handbag. Want an app review site to give your app a spin? They’ll probably want a promo code. Want to give away 50 copies of your app on Facebook to kickstart word-of-mouth? Unless you’re going to eat the cost of all 50 installs, you’ll need 50 promo codes. Alas, most mobile ...

Instapaper’s free version goes on extended hiatus, dev explains why Marco Arment has an interesting writeup on his blog about his iOS app Instapaper (and of course the web service that runs behind it). Arment says on his blog that he's quietly been removing the free version of the app from the App Store, and that's resulted in a surprising effect: Sales of the full app have actually increased. Because of this, Arment says he's rethinking a free version completely, and may ...
Homer Simpson comes to the Tom Tom app

Homer Simpson comes to the Tom Tom app The voice of cartoon character Homer Simpson, as performed by actor Dan Castellaneta, is now available as an in-app purchase in Tom Tom's US-based GPS apps for the iPhone right now. For $5.99, you too can have Homer say "[Annoyed Grunt]" when you make a wrong turn, or "Woo hoo!" when you reach your destination. Pricey? Maybe so, but considering the apps already cost about $50 (not to mention a subscription charge for other services), you're all-in anyway, ...
First Lawsuit Filed Against Apple For Undocumented Location Database

First Lawsuit Filed Against Apple For Undocumented Location Database With no real statement from Apple regarding the present consolidated.db tracking file furor , the obvious next step is to take it to the courts. Actually, the next step should be a rigorous federal investigation into whether or not Apple has broken any laws. Then, if it has, sue away. And if it hasn’t, sue anyway just in case. Vikram Ajjampur and William Devito are a little impatient, however, and have filed a lawsuit against Apple already. Now, I’m all in favor of suing Apple — as ...

US Army opts for Android over iPhone Wired is reporting that the US Army has chosen to use an Android-based phone as its first smartphone for US troops. Now in prototype stage, the US Army Android smartphone is called the Joint Battle Command-Platform and will have its SDK released to Android developers in July. Currently, the phone has mapping apps and apps that track where friendly forces are. It's really no surprise the US Army opted for an Android phone over an iPhone. Android phones allow the US Army ...
The Engrain Keyboard Is An Apple Keyboard Turned Art
April 22, 2011 – 9:50 am | No Comment
The Engrain Keyboard Is An Apple Keyboard Turned Art I totally enjoy the overall theme of the Engrain Tactile Keyboard but love the textured keys made by just sandblasting a board, which removes the softer wood in between the grain. The keys are then cut, branded and glued to an Apple keyboard. But unfortunately this is just a one-off concept and will likely not be sold retail. You could make your own, though. I might. (but probably not) [ Coroflot via Wired ] Read more ...
