Strategic Sharing: Zipcar Leads $13.7M Investment In Campus Car-Sharing Startup Wheelz
February 22, 2012 – 8:25 am | No Comment

Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Detroit-based Fontinalis…

iBoobs Reborn: Undaunted, The Famous Chest App Comes To Android
March 6, 2011 – 12:06 pm | No Comment
When Apple kicked iBoobs out of the App Store in 2008, they struck a blow against freedom what was heard around the world. Some historians believe that the Great iBoobs Reaping of 2008 is the cause of our current economic and societal malaise, and who are we to question their findings? But friends: the times they are a changin’. iBoobs, an app that allows you to shake the mammaries of various female avatars, is back… on the Android Marketplace. That’s right: Google understands freedom and the makers of iBoobs, ...
A Day In The Life Of A Liveblogger
March 4, 2011 – 8:35 pm | No Comment
A Day In The Life Of A Liveblogger I hate liveblogging major events. It’s hard. It’s painfully frustrating, and lifespan-limitingly stressful. I also absolutely love it, and it’s one of my favorite parts of this job. It’s something that, from a technical stand point, was next to impossible to accomplish just years ago. It lets us transport our readers from their offices and living rooms to a spot right beside us in the packed auditorium, an experience that post-event recaps and standard news posts just can’t provide. Our liveblog of Apple’s iPad 2 event on ...
Seriously Scary Android Malware Quickly Pulled From Market
March 1, 2011 – 11:49 pm | No Comment
Seriously Scary Android Malware Quickly Pulled From Market Apple’s semi-arbitrary approach to app store management may have problems , but Android (as much as I love it) is a jungle in comparison. Just tonight Google has pulled an app that, if downloaded, would have essentially rooted your phone and sent off every single detail it could find to a server in Fremont, California. Not only that, but it had the ability to download more code, potentially making it even more dangerous. Redditor lompolo was investigating a suspicious app (Super Guitar Solo) that appeared to be ...

Angry Birds Coming To Windows Phone 7 On April 6th
February 24, 2011 – 9:39 pm | No Comment
Angry Birds Coming To Windows Phone 7 On April 6th If your Windows Phone 7 handset was one of the unfortunate few that got bricked by Microsoft’s little-update-that-couldn’t , you’re going to want to get that fixed quick. At the very latest, you’re going to want to have things all patched up by April 6th. Why? Because it’s Angry Birds Time! Rovio’s Peter Vesterbacka confirmed last week at Mobile World Congress that the Birds were comin’ to Windows Phone 7, but he couldn’t get too specific about the launch date. Microsoft went ahead and filled in the ...
Study: Cell Phone Radiation May Cause Brain Activity, Whatever That Means
February 23, 2011 – 6:49 am | No Comment
Study: Cell Phone Radiation May Cause Brain Activity, Whatever That Means Do cell phones cause cancer? Some say yes . Some say no . Nobody knows. The frequencies and powers of the radiation used in them haven’t been in use long enough for us to get decent long-terms studies out of them. Sure, the FCC makes sure you’re not frying your cortex with clearly harmful emissions (talk radio doesn’t count), but it could be that after 30 or 40 years, we all get head cancer. Or we all get super powers. It could go either way. A new ...
Optimus 3D And Xperia Play On Pre-Order In UK For Over £500
February 21, 2011 – 5:23 pm | No Comment
Optimus 3D And Xperia Play On Pre-Order In UK For Over £500 This is just one of those early, unsubsidized, let’s-not-freak-out-yet prices, but still. £520 works out to nearly 850 of our anemic US dollars. What does Sony-Ericsson think this Play thing is, the PSP 2 ? And the Optimus 3D — it’s certainly a beast of a phone, but with the 3D effect not blowing us away and the market for that kind of thing rather limited, I’m not sure it’s going to move a lot of units without an 80% carrier subsidy. Hey, it happens. The prices ...
PlayOn Officially Rolls Onto Android, Brings Netflix And Hulu With It
February 20, 2011 – 5:29 am | No Comment
PlayOn Officially Rolls Onto Android, Brings Netflix And Hulu With It Given what Netflix has said so far, we know that Netflix for Android is coming… eventually . Even then, Netflix is still being a bit mysterious about which devices it’ll work on (though given their recent Qualcomm partnership, “things running a Snapdragon CPU” is a good guess.) In the meantime, there’s a work around of sorts: PlayOn . After months of beta testing, PlayOn for Android is now available. The catch: while the app is free, the service is not ($39.99 for the first year/$19.99 each year ...
Microsoft Moves To Trademark The Look Of The Windows Phone 7 Homescreen
February 18, 2011 – 9:22 pm | No Comment
Microsoft Moves To Trademark The Look Of The Windows Phone 7 Homescreen Microsoft is proud of the way Windows Phone 7 looks. Like, really, really proud. As in they spend 5 minutes telling us how proud they are of it every time they hold a press conference. That and the fact that the camera button works even when the handset is locked are totally (and deservedly) their two favorite talking points. Lookin’ to make sure no one tries to pull off anything that too closely resembles their precious, Microsoft has just filed a trademark covering the look of the ...

First Impressions This thing is surprisingly light. It looks heavier than it is (a stark contrast from ...
