Strategic Sharing: Zipcar Leads $13.7M Investment In Campus Car-Sharing Startup Wheelz
February 22, 2012 – 8:25 am | No Comment

Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Detroit-based Fontinalis…

LG to announce “next generation” of Optimus line tomorrow with two new Android phones
September 13, 2010 – 2:06 pm | No Comment
LG to announce “next generation” of Optimus line tomorrow with two new Android phones Back in April of this year, LG launched the Android-powered LG Optimus. Bearing “Optimal performance for first time smartphone users” as its slogan, it was built for the lower-end of the smartphone market — it was fancy, but not too fancy. Kind of a disappointing use of the “Optimus” name — but hey, it’s their trademark. Come 6 o’clock tomorrow evening in Seoul, LG will be launching what they call “the next generation of LG Optimus smartphones”. How mysterious! Alas, LG’s not too good at keeping secrets; ...
Android’s newest flavour: Tapas

Android’s newest flavour: Tapas While Google has a history of giving Android tasty names for its version names, it seems that they aren’t the only ones that equate green robots with food. Today, ex-Google China president, Kai-Fu Lee, announced in the Wall Street Journal that he will launch a whole new mobile operating system based on Android, to be known as “ Tapas “. This isn’t the first not-quite-Android OS that China has produced — that credit goes to China Mobile’s OPhone — but Kai-Fu Lee believes that the new modifications ...

So it is with much joy that I inform you that His And Hers Android today posted some up-close images of the device’s QWERTY keyboard. Got 10 bucks and 5 minutes? Turn your iPhone 4 into a 12X Microscope See that shot above? That was taken with an iPhone 4. Don’t believe it? See how in the video after the jump. Armed with nothing but a $7 mini-microscope and the cheapest (around $3) back-protecting iPhone case they could find, the guys over at Crabfu managed to convert their iPhone 4 into an on-the-go microscope camera capable of taking shots at a 12x zoom level. Ten bucks for at least a few hours of wandering around my house looking at everything way closer than I probably should? ...
World Record texting speed broken — and once again, it’s with Swype

World Record texting speed broken — and once again, it’s with Swype Back in March of this year, Guiness opened up their big book o’ World Records to anyone willing to claim that they were the fastest touchscreen texter on the block. The first contender to step up to the plate was a gent named Franklin Page , who used Swype’s slide-to-type tech to blast out Guiness’ headache-inducing pre-set sentence in just 35.54 seconds. Surely by no coincidence, Page was a Swype employee. Five months later, someone else has come forward for their shot at the heavyweight belt fancy ...

Palm working on a high-res device called the “RoadRunner HD”? This is just the most micro-sized of clues we’re going on here, but some analytics have logged a device running webOS 2.0 on a 960

Random App Plug: Typography Manual
August 1, 2010 – 6:27 am | No Comment
Random App Plug: Typography Manual If you spend a lot of time in a web publishing environment, it pays to be aware of all the little things that make writing and layouts work — and not work. The wrong line height or kerning/font combination can be disastrous to readability. You can, of course, read books on the subject, but a ready reference tool can be had in this Typography Manual app , which looks about as to-the-point as such things can get. It does in fact comprise a short book, along with ...
Palm HP gives away Pres to everyone at Brainstorm conference

Palm HP gives away Pres to everyone at Brainstorm conference The giveaways continue! Google , Microsoft , now HP — apparently, the cool thing to do is to get your product in the hands of people who may or may not even want it. HP’s Todd Bradley and Jon Rubenstein just gave away Pres to everyone in the audience at Fortune’s Brainstorm Tech conference. I think it’s a great idea, personally. It’s important to Microsoft to do serious mass testing of its product before putting it out there, and it’s important to HP to keep webOS fresh ...
