Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Target Slaps Ridiculously Low Price Tags On The Samsung Droid Charge and LG Revolution
July 22, 2011 – 3:32 pm | No Comment
Everybody wants a 4G-capable phone. That’s a given. The only issue is that, like all new technology, they cost a pretty penny, especially from good ol’ Big Red. As in, way more than we’re used to seeing on any smartphone (most high-end handsets cost around $200). Luckily, Target has stepped in to alleviate some of the cost on at least two 4G LTE-capable phones, offering the LG Revolution and the Samsung Droid Charge online for way below what Verizon ’s asking. The Revolution currently costs $249.99 on a new ...

MobileCrunch Is Moving, But Just Down The Block

MobileCrunch Is Moving, But Just Down The Block A bit over 3 years ago, I applied for an internship at CrunchGear on a whim. I didn’t quite know what I was getting myself into. As luck had it, the powers that be liked my style. I wasn’t even too sure I’d hear back regarding the intern position, so imagine my surprise when they countered with a proper, paying job offer. “MobileCrunch needs a new editor,” they said. “ See what you can do with it. ” In those 3 years, MobileCrunch has evolved from a ...

Motorola Continues Locked Bootloader Policy On Droid 3 (For Now) Listen up, hackers. This one’s for you. Motorola’s Droid 3 is finally out and about in all of its tech spec glory, but one thing’s missing: an unlocked bootloader. That’s right, Motorola’s gone and done it again, locking Droid 3 owners in an Android cage, just like Atrix owners, Droid 2 owners, and the list goes on. Luckily, an unlocked bootloader is on its way. “As we’ve communicated, we plan to enable the unlockable/relockable bootloader in future software releases, starting in late 2011, where channel and operator ...

Motorola Droid 3 Hits Verizon’s Shelves For $199.99 On-Contract Even though Verizon tried to pull a fast one on us by skipping pre-order altogether, we were still accurate when we originally pegged the Droid 3 arrival for today, July 7 . That’s right folks, the Motorola Droid 3 is available now from Verizon , and she’s a beauty. Big red lists the phone for $459.99 off-contract, and $199.99 with a new or upgraded two-year contract. Foursquare Finds Its Way To Windows Phone 7
July 2, 2011 – 5:15 am | No Comment
Foursquare Finds Its Way To Windows Phone 7 Ah-hah! There we go. Just days ago we were pointing out how strange it was that Foursquare still didn’t have a proper Windows Phone 7 application (especially as Microsoft had touted Foursquare around as a partner since the very beginning), and now they’ve gone and made things right. Following Gowalla into the Windows Phone fray by less than a week, Foursquare has just pushed their official WP7 application into Microsoft’s Marketplace. It looks like that extra time in the oven really did it some good. It is, ...
Apple Brings Its Copycat Beef To Samsung’s Home Turf

Apple Brings Its Copycat Beef To Samsung’s Home Turf If at first you don’t succeed, dust yourself off, fly across the Pacific, and try again! At least, that seems to be the plan over at Apple . On Wednesday, Judge Lucy Koh gave a court order rejecting Samsung’s request to check out the iPad 3 and the iPhone 5, but in her order we stumbled upon a tricky little passage. In that passage, Judge Koh hinted that she would not give Apple the preliminary injunction it’s hoping for. Now, two days later, Apple has taken its ...
iOS 5 Legal Disclaimer Section Includes Mapping Companies That Are… Not Google!

iOS 5 Legal Disclaimer Section Includes Mapping Companies That Are… Not Google! Even though Apple has let Google answer life’s navigational questions for us thus far, it doesn’t mean that Apple wants one of its biggest competitors cashing in on the iPhone and iPad forever. Speculation surrounding Google Maps getting replaced in iOS has been around for years. In 2009, Apple bought a couple mapping companies . In mid-2010, the iPhone maker scrapped Google and Skyhook ‘s location databases in favor of its own, and a couple months later started hiring iOS engineers with mapping experience. That’s more than ...
