Command & Conquer coded in HTML5
January 24, 2012 – 9:57 pm | No Comment

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

October 1, 2011 – 12:29 pm | No Comment
The9 Launches Mobile Gaming Platform & SDK To Give Developers Access To The Chinese Market The9 , the sizable NASDAQ-listed Chinese game publisher and developer, has made quite a few investments in the U.S. gaming market over the last year. ( Reflecting, it seems, a rising Asian interest in U.S. companies, especially gaming .) As part of its international strategy, The9 has been full-steam ahead on creating better ways for international gaming companies and developers to make inroads into the Chinese mobile and social gaming markets, which have been traditionally difficult areas for non-Chinese developers to access effectively (and profitably). In May, ...

Is iOS5′s Assistant Going To Be Voice Control On Steroids? “Remind me to watch the Doctor Who season finale this Saturday.” If new reports are to be believed, then the iPhone 5′s new Assistant functionality can take voice input like that and automagically convert it into an entry in iOS 5′s Reminders app. 9to5Mac’s sources have come forward with boatloads of new details about Apple’s attempts to shoehorn voice commands into iOS, and if true, they paint quite the compelling picture. British sci-fi reminders aside, Assistant is said to be embedded deep within iOS, connecting it to ...

Stable release of Chrome 14 out now, brings a few upgrades for Lion users The very latest software goodness from Google has arrived, with Chrome hitting its 14th iteration (celebration, anyone?). This one gives Mac OS X Lion users a little something extra, with access to overlay scrollbars within the browser. Chrome can also can also upsize itself now -- accessible with a tap of the full-screen button or the more conventional Ctrl+Shift+F. The new web audio API gives developers the ability to add fancy sound effects and adjustments, whilst native client is an open-source addition; though this ...

Microsoft App Store Approach for Windows 8 Metro Apps It’s hard to deny that the (Apple) App Store is not a huge success, and it looks like Microsoft is taking a page from Apple’s book, as it announced at the BUILD conference this week that Windows 8 will have an app store that users will have to use in order to purchase/download content for the tablet. Fortunately it’s only going to be for the Metro UI version of Windows 8 – “Classic” Windows 8 will still have ...
Microsoft Charm

Microsoft Charm Chew on this: two days after unveiling the developer preview of the next generation of its Windows operating system ( “Hands On With Windows 8″ ), Microsoft filed a U.S. federal trademark registration for the word ‘CHARM’ . The description provided to the USPTO for CHARM is “computer programs; graphical user interface software; operating system programs”. They’ve left cybersquatters the opportunity to grab microsoftcharm.com and windowscharm.com, though, so the trademark filing doesn’t necessarily mean anything. Interesting, nevertheless, particularly given the timing. If anyone knows what’s something cooking ...

Ad-supported Kindle getting AmazonLocal to distract you from all that pesky reading Reading's all well and good, but wouldn't you rather be, say, getting a massage or seeing a comedy show? Good news, Amazon is bringing its AmazonLocal service to the ad-supported Kindle With Special Offers and Kindle With Special Offers 3G. Spotify And Ford Team Together To Showcase The Music Service’s First In-Car Integration Today at the TechCrunch Hackathon, Ford, the second largest automaker in the U.S., teamed with Spotify, the fast-growing Swedish music service that recently arrived in the states, to demonstrate the current opportunities for in-car app innovation as well as the new voice-activated Ford SYNC system. Just to clarify: This isn’t an “official partnership”, it’s just a cool hack meant to demonstrate how easy it is to integrate with SYNC. For those unfamiliar, Ford SYNC is the in-vehicle communications and entertainment system that allows drivers to make hands-free ...
Review: Microsoft’s Touch Mouse And Explorer Touch Mouse
September 4, 2011 – 4:45 am | No Comment
Review: Microsoft’s Touch Mouse And Explorer Touch Mouse I got a chance to play with two of Microsoft’s three touch mouse offerings — the Explorer Touch Mouse and the flagship Touch Mouse — and as far as ideas go, they’re absolutely wonderful. But in terms of execution, the whole “touch” part didn’t exactly impress. When compared to your standard desktop mouse, these two offerings from Microsoft could easily go toe-to-toe. But once we start getting into the touch capabilities of each — especially the Touch Mouse — things start getting a little shaky. Let’s take ...

Toshiba announces Camileo Clip, X200 and X400 camcorders Not surprisingly, Toshiba is covering all the bases at IFA today, with it now also announcing its latest batch of camcorders. That includes the Camileo Clip pictured above (which actually has a clip 'round back for hands-free shooting), as well as the more traditional Camileo X200 and X400, all three of which record 1080p video and rely exclusively on SD cards for storage. The X200 and X400 also, of course, steps things up quite a bit in terms of features, the standout ones being ...
