Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Hanako 2 upgraded to new and improved model When it comes to dealing with robots, they do help out in the medical industry as budding doctors learn the tricks of their trade by “operating” on such robots – so it makes perfect sense to make it as realistic as possible. Hanako 2 is a Japanese dental patient simulator that allows dentists to practice “real-life” procedures on her before they start drilling actual human patients’ teeth. What does Hanako 2 bring to the table? Well, “she” is ...

Parrot AR.Drone floats into damaged New Zealand cathedral, returns with haunting video Whenever disaster strikes, robots are among the first to scope out the damage. Rarely, however, do they return with footage as eerie as what this Parrot AR.Drone recorded in Christchurch, New Zealand. In the wake of Monday's 6.0-magnitude earthquake, engineers sent the $500 bot into the city's Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament -- a 106-year-old Roman Catholic church that had sustained significant damage, rendering it too dangerous for humans to enter. The iPad-controlled quadrocopter swooped in and captured ...

Images Of The Vuzix STAR 1200 Augmented Reality Glasses The week of May 16th, Vuzix — makers of military and consumer grade Augmented Reality eyewear — announced their newest line of AR glasses as the STAR 1200. As their press release states , STAR stands for See-Through-Augmented-Reality and describes the killer feature of this new concept — transparent displays. Rather than viewing small, mounted video screens in the eyewear that show you both the “real” and “augmented” content at the same time (transferred from external cameras) the STAR 1200 has transparent displays for the “augmented” content ...

Binary Chairs by BRC Designs Binary Chair 02 by BRC Designs When we published about the Binary Low Table, we wished to see a similar design applied to a sofa – although we thought that our rear end would probably not be too appreciative of that “effort” – it looks like BRC designs has fulfilled our wish and the result looks comfortable enough… The Binary Chairs would be perfect for the geeks who want to feel like they are living in the inside ...

Japan Sends Team Of 23 Rescue Robots That Withstand Radiation To Fukushima [Update: Videos] Japan’s International Rescue System Institute (IRS) unveiled a new rescue robot that can be used to take over the work from humans in high-radiation areas. Not too surprisingly, the institute announced the remote-controlled machines will be used to scope out the situation in various places at the damaged nuclear power plant in Fukushima. The IRS says the robots can withstand radiation (up to 20 Sv currently) and are also water-proof to a certain extent (driving through puddles, for example, is supposed to be no problem). A team ...

Mechanical bird flaps its wing to fly, just like the real thing Real birds make it look easy, but it turns out that making something that can fly by flapping its wings is incredibly difficult. That didn't stop the folks at Festo's Bionic Learning Network from creating this elegant autonomous Herring Gull, that can fly using no propulsion other than its wings.

This 26 foot snakebot should help Japanese rescuers find victims Much has been said about how Japan is better prepared for earthquakes than any other country, and some of this prep involves the robots they have developed to help in rescue situations. This self propelled snakebot is designed to burrow deep into collapsed buildings, showing rescuers anyone who might be trapped inside.

AIST shows off full-color night vision camera, well lit Bullwinkle figurine (video) You might know them for seemingly ridiculous innovations like Segway shoes or the HRP-4C pop star robot, but the folks at AIST have put away the gimmicks for their latest invention -- a full-color night vision camera. Produced by Nanolux, an arm of AIST, the camera uses a series of algorithms to read and process wavelengths reflected by objects lit with infrareds, allowing it to successfully reproduce reds, blues, and greens in ...
