Command & Conquer coded in HTML5
January 24, 2012 – 9:57 pm | No Comment

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

March 6, 2011 – 12:06 pm | No Comment
Fly Or Die: The iPad2, ecoATM, and SocialEyes Last week was about the other tablets , but this week was all about the iPad 2. You’ve read all the posts and previews , but will it fly as high as Steve Jobs says it will? And what, if anything could kill the iPad 2? Watch this episode of Fly or Die to find out. Crunchgear editor John Biggs and I also discuss the prospects of two new startups that just launched this week at DEMO, ecoATM and SocialEyes . The ecoATM is a kiosk that ...
Google’s self-driving car takes the public for a ride
March 4, 2011 – 7:26 am | No Comment
Google’s self-driving car takes the public for a ride Google’s super high-tech, self driving car that was revealed last year, has finally been developed enough to give members of the public to experience. At the TED conference 2011 this week, the folks from Search Engine Land got to experience what it was like to be inside the self-driving car and even recorded some video footage of it in action. The car drove itself around a closed circuit, pretty aggressive I might add, but ...
Lonely Planet launches audio walking tours in London

Lonely Planet launches audio walking tours in London This is a cool new feature in travel apps that I'd like to see a lot more of: Lonely Planet has released some walking audio tours as apps on the App Store. Unfortunately, all of the tours so far are just based in London, but the apps will walk you around some of London's most interesting areas, including Covent Garden and the West End, bringing along audio reviews and insight from Lonely Planet's editors and experts. The apps ...

The TUAW-sponsored subscription deal is offered for one day only, and ...
Steve Sande: A first look at The Daily
February 2, 2011 – 12:36 pm | No Comment
Steve Sande: A first look at The Daily I haven't read a newspaper since the Rocky Mountain News went belly-up a few years ago, and I'm not a fan of broadcast or cable news at all. So Rupert Murdoch (at right, during this morning's press conference) and his minions at News Corp have a long way to go to impress someone who pretty much gets all of his news from RSS feeds, occasional peeks at news websites, and Twitter. I downloaded The Daily for free a ...
USA Today updates and improves iPad app
January 23, 2011 – 12:47 pm | No Comment
USA Today updates and improves iPad app There are plenty of news apps for the iPad, but I'm happy to see USA Today aggressively improving what was already a useful and easy to use app. Version 2.0 is still free, and has added more extensive tech coverage. Tech reviews feature iPad apps, and there is a video player, along with a spiffy This Week in Space section. The app also has increased travel coverage, along with a map that displays airport delays. The app now multitasks in ...
First Look: HTC EVO Shift 4G
January 10, 2011 – 4:46 am | No Comment
First Look: HTC EVO Shift 4G Evolution seems to be a bit less violent this time around. The just-announced HTC EVO Shift 4G attempts to build on the brand started with the much-hyped EVO 4G superphone that launched back in 2010′s summer. Instead of fordging a new path with a fresh form factor and top-tier specs, the HTC EVO Shift 4G does things a bit more low-key. That’s not saying the Shift 4G isn’t a quality kit. It’s not. Inside the somewhat thick body is the same speedy 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7630 CPU found in ...

Solar Vox Charging Station: Another way to charge by the sun

Solar Vox Charging Station: Another way to charge by the sun We are not stranger to solar-powered chargers here, like the Solio, Solar Arcadia, and the Hymini solar powered charger. This is the Solar Vox charging station, and it is designed to charge a portable device by harnessing the sun’s rays at many angles. Think of it as sort of a sundial to capture the sunlight in optimal conditions. You will note that it has a hollow place to ...
Review: DODOcase for the iPad
December 16, 2010 – 6:00 pm | No Comment
Review: DODOcase for the iPad Short Version: The Dodocase is about as close to perfection as iPad cases get. The materials are beautiful, and the craftsmanship is spectacular. It has a few quirks inherent to the materials used — but as long as you know what you’re buying, you’ll be happy. Also, this case could probably get you laid. Long Version : I tend to be a bit of a stickler when it comes to reviews, finding things to nag about in even the finest products. It’s not that I’m a cynic, ...
