First Look: Tom Bihn Ristretto bag for iPad
June 26, 2010 – 1:06 pm | No Comment

I blame Steve Sande for my newest iPad-related purchase. Well, there’s a lot of things to blame Steve for, but it was his reviews of the Tom Bihn Western Flyer and Checkpoint Flyer that had me checking out the company he bought the bags from last year. Tom Bihn is based in Seattle and has the distinction of being among those rare companies that still makes its products in the U.S. using mostly U.S.-produced materials. Only a few components are sourced from overseas, but those parts are fully disclosed. Tom Bihn was also had gear designed specifically iPad right off the bat, announcing its offerings — The Ristretto and the Cache for iPad — just hours after the original iPad announcement. The US$110 Ristretto, which also comes in a larger size designed to hold a MacBook, is a vertical messenger bag with a padded area that is large enough to hold a netbook or an iPad. After having my iPad and accessories bounce around a larger bag for a few weeks, I caved and placed…

FaceTime video quality sucks, but the experience still rocks With its new front-facing camera, the iPhone 4 brings videoconferencing to the masses. The idea is compelling. Those heartrending, fancy demo videos of FaceTime, Apple's application that goes with that camera, make it look like something out of a sci-fi movie. And you know what? It feels like that.
Topping the App Store charts with Angry Birds

Topping the App Store charts with Angry Birds Angry Birds is one of the growing number of phenomenal success stories coming out of the App Store. It's a simple game; you drag birds in a slingshot in order to try and get them to knock down structures and hit green pigs. It's really resonated with audiences, though, and just like we heard with Doodle Jump, a string of constant free updates has propelled it to the top of the charts. I ...

Paid apps do better in the charts than free ones

Paid apps do better in the charts than free ones Recently, we've seen a big trend of apps on the App Store going free because free apps tend to garner more attention and downloads (and in-app purchases mean that there's still a possibility of making a profit down the line). However, it turns out that there is one benefit of sticking with a paid app: they stay on the top of the charts for a longer period of time. Data (provided by a company called Distimo) for ...
Archos 7 Home Tablet shows why touchscreen quality is everything

Archos 7 Home Tablet shows why touchscreen quality is everything Archos just released its Archos 7 Home Tablet, an Android-running, low-cost Wi-Fi slab that can put the Internet in your hands for a mere $199. The price seems way too low, especially given the apparent quality of this attractive handheld device. However, it has one fatal flaw, turning our opinion of it from love at first sight to sheer loathing with the mere touch of a finger. In this high-tech world of Internet-connected devices, the key to ...
The iPad could be the best mobile accessibility device on the market

The iPad could be the best mobile accessibility device on the market In 1995 Dr. Norman Coombs, a blind professor of history at the Rochester Institute of Technology and chairman of EASI: Equal Access to Software and Information wrote that the rapid adoption of a graphical user interface (GUI) would close the door on computing for the visually impaired. This was in largely in response to the Microsoft's Windows OS, but his point was well taken regarding all GUI based computing. Speech output systems, at that time, were based ...

Review: Canon Rebel T2i DSLR camera Short version: An outstanding consumer DSLR and liberating video recorder, the T2i is a powerhouse media device in a small and relatively affordable package. What I think of as killer features, however, may not be viewed as such by the buying population at large. Features: 18-megapixel images/up to 1080p video ISO 100-6400 3″ high-resolution LCD (1040K dots/720
Garmin Forerunner 110 GPS watch works just as well as the fancy ones, costs less

Garmin Forerunner 110 GPS watch works just as well as the fancy ones, costs less It's been two years since we reviewed the Garmin Forerunner 405, a $301 GPS fitness watch that worked well and offered innovative new features. Now Garmin has taken the best parts of that expensive watch and offered them in a more reasonably priced model. The result is the $250 Garmin Forerunner 110, a GPS fitness watch that lacks its older brother's high-tech features but still gets the job ...
