February 22, 2012 – 8:25 am | No Comment

Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Detroit-based Fontinalis…

Sony has announced that as of today, the tablet is now available in the US. While the tablet is months late to the market (other countries have already gotten it), it’s better late than never right? The Sony Tablet P features two 5.5″ TruBlack (1024 x ...
Asus Rebrands Its Tablet Line To “Transformer Pads”, Launches The TF Pad Infinity & TF Pad 300

Asus Rebrands Its Tablet Line To “Transformer Pads”, Launches The TF Pad Infinity & TF Pad 300 Once upon a time the Asus Eee brand held some weight. The Eee name debuted with Asus’ netbook line, which nearly instantly set the bar for low-cost, but still quality, computing devices. That’s why the Eee brand was used for Asus’ first tablets. But now, in 2012, with netbooks quickly fading into irrelevance, Asus wisely decided it was time to retire the name. From here on out Asus tablets will be known as Transformer Pads. Along with the rebranding, Asus also used the Mobile World Congress stage ...

Android Smartphone Round-Up: December/January Edition We took a break from the Android round-up in December because, well, to be honest I was on vacation. But January gave us a few extra smartphones and the holidays are over, so we’re back. What we’ve got for you today leans into more expensive turf, and unfortunately, our favorite Android devices for the past two months are also exclusively at Verizon, so Big Red subscribers should pay attention. Without further ado, these are our favorite December/January releases of the Android persuasion: The Samsung Galaxy Nexus , ...

January 14, 2012 – 6:33 pm | No Comment
Droid RAZR MAXX To Launch On January 26th? While there wasn’t much to say about the recently announced Droid RAZR MAXX to begin with (it’s essentially the Droid RAZR with a bigger battery and more storage ), Motorola and Verizon decided to leave out one key bit of detail: the launch date. While it’s still not 100% confirmed, Motorola’s own RAZR MAXX product page now pinpoints the big day as January 26th. Don’t go lining up outside of the Verizon store on the 26th or anything (this could very well be a placeholder, or a ...
Simple.tv DVR / placeshifter frees free TV from the constraints of location, time

Simple.tv DVR / placeshifter frees free TV from the constraints of location, time One of the many innovative products we checked out tonight was this ViXS XCode 4210 powered Simple.TV box, which tunes into free, unencrypted channels (even in HD) via cable or antenna. Where it starts to differ from other boxes like Sling and Monsoon however, is that it eschews any direct video out or even passthrough, working solely to transcode those feeds to variable bitrate MPEG-4 streams for playback on internet-connected mobile devices and TV boxes. Besides the missing ...

China trumpets completion of ‘world’s largest battery energy storage station’ See that above? That's the world's largest battery energy storage station, or so says the State Grid Corporation of China and BYD. The two entities have just wrapped up construction on the Zhangbei-based project, which marries 40 Mega-Watts of renewable energy generation (both wind and solar), 36 Mega-Watt-Hours (MWh) of energy storage and a smart power transmission system. The goal? To provide a "stable solution for transferring vast amounts of renewable electricity safely to the grid on an unprecedented scale." As ...

The First Ice Cream Sandwich Android Tablet Surfaces In China Right now the only way to officially taste Ice Cream Sandwich on a device is on the Galaxy Nexus. Google stated that it would eventually hit tablets. Well, the wait is over. Somewhere in the bowels of China the first ICS tablet has appeared. It’s a Xoom clone powered by slightly-dated hardware but it’s running 4.0.1. That’s all that counts. The story goes that the tab shown here (and in the video after the jump) is the first 4.0.1 tablet. As Shanzhaiben  and GizChina notes, the 10.1-inch ...
The Promise Of The 15-Inch MacBook Air
November 29, 2011 – 2:20 am | No Comment
The Promise Of The 15-Inch MacBook Air In my home office sits a 27-inch iMac with a secondary 24-inch LED Cinema Display attached to it. It’s a glorious vision of screen real estate. And yet, I dread using it. First world problem? It’s perhaps the definition of the term. But it’s true. I’m sitting here on a couch adjacent to my desk because I’d rather type this post on my MacBook Air. To be completely honest, I’d rather be using my iPad right now . But I must admit, it doesn’t come anywhere close ...
