February 22, 2012 – 8:25 am | No Comment

Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Detroit-based Fontinalis…

Things might go more smoothly if you installed the Boxetti Thrill, a fold open home theater cabinet from Lithuanian designer Rolands Landsbergs. Normally, it just looks like a trendy designer dresser or side table, buy come movie time, it flips open Transformers style to reveal a full home ...

3 Million Square Feet of Robotics For Sale [Robots] If you've always dreamed of taking over the world with an army of robots, but your plans have stalled due to your characteristic procrastination (or lack of robots), this, my friends, is your time to act. The robots in this 3 million square foot factory in Newark, Delaware used to make cars for Chrysler. But I don't think they'll complain if you put them to work for more nefarious ends. The auction is being held by the University of Delaware, who bought the Chrysler plant and all ...

Kingston SSDNow V dips to 30GB size, lower price

Kingston SSDNow V dips to 30GB size, lower price We've already made our fond feelings toward Kingston's SSDNow V line quite clear, so you'll understand our joy at the news that it's about to add a new member to the fold. Cutting storage down to 30GB should mean Kingston is about to offer its cheapest drive yet, though all the info we have is that it'll be "under 90GBP" (or $145). That doesn't immediately strike us as better value than the 40GB SSDNow V -- which ...

Horizon Hydrofill Hydrogen Refueling and Storage Solution [CES 2010] We published about Horizon Hydrofill, when it was announced prior to CES on Jan. 4th, and we got a chance to see the device at the show. The Hydrofill system basically extracts hydrogen from water using electrolysis, and store it in the Hydrostick solid hydrogen cartridges. 60 ...
Not a Rumor: LG launches the Sprint Rumor Touch at CES
January 8, 2010 – 8:00 pm | No Comment
Not a Rumor: LG launches the Sprint Rumor Touch at CES It’s been a big week of sequels for LG at CES 2010; first they launch the LG Lotus’ slightly-upgraded sibling, the Lotus Elite, and now they’re following up the LG Rumor with the finger-centric Rumor Touch. The LG Rumor Touch is a feature phone, but it’s probably about as fancy as feature phones come before you start wondering why the didn’t pack a bigger, badder operating system on it. It’s got a 3″ WQVGA touchscreen, 2 megapixel camera, support for up to 32GB of storage via microSD, ...
Hands on and video: Lenovo’s Lephone
January 7, 2010 – 1:43 am | No Comment
Hands on and video: Lenovo’s Lephone Lenovo gave us a chance to check out their latest smartphone today at CES 2010. It’s Android-based with a complete facelift and hardly any of the original OS sticking out. I doubt they intended it to be, but it seems like a sort of interesting mix of webOS, iPhone, and Android features. I quite liked it. Apologies for the noise in the video above, it was captured in an incredibly crowded area. But you get the gist. Just cruise through and check out the screens and animations. ...
Airstash brings wireless storage to iPhone

Airstash brings wireless storage to iPhone In 2007 I thought that my 8GB iPhone was as large as I would ever need. Two and a half years later and I've already filled up the 16GB storage of my iPhone 3GS. Enter AirStash, an expandable flash drive (via SD memory) that you will be able to access from your iPhone. Simply plug AirStash into your Mac, drag and drop some files to the mounted volume, and head then out the door with AirStash and ...

Buffalo Japan sells very pretty external HDD If you ever wanted to watch movies stored on your computer (you know, the ones you legally downloaded from the web earlier) in style, Buffalo might have the right device for you. Their HD-AV2.0TU2 [JP], an external HDD, is currently Japan-only, but the company sells a good number of external storage solutions in other countries, for example the US , too (which means this new HDD might become available there in the future). The main selling point of the HDD is the nice design. Technically, the device ...
Dell, Toshiba and Gateway Core i3 laptops get revealed early, joined by Pine Trail netbooks
January 3, 2010 – 7:49 pm | No Comment
Dell, Toshiba and Gateway Core i3 laptops get revealed early, joined by Pine Trail netbooks And just like that, the CES 2010 on-switch has been well and truly pressed. After HP, Sony and Lenovo all exposed their hardware to the world prematurely, it was inevitable that other companies would "accidentally" follow suit. Thanks to CNET's snooping, we're now staring at a trio of new Core i3 models from Dell, Toshiba and Gateway -- highlighted by an unannounced ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 powering a 1600 x 900 ...
