[Image via The Stub ] If you’ve been avidly following the Hollywood scuttlebutt this past week, you’ve probably heard of an event which is unfolding at this very moment: The 82nd Annual Academy Awards. We know how badly you guys want to be able to talk about the Oscars whilst chatting over your place of business’ water cooler, coffee pot or rodeo clown make-up station, so we’re here to help you understand the Awards ceremony in terms you’ll find easily understandable: The Oscars are the Spike TV Video Game Awards, but for movies. The similarities between the two events really are pretty striking — the awkward presentation by the cast of the Jersey Shore and Mike Tyson will surely be paralleled by the Oscars’ pairing of Young Starlet A and Lecherous Old Comedian B. While the VGAs have scantily-clad, off-season Victoria’s Secret models hand out their awards, the Oscars assign that task to off-season actors , who spend a majority of their on-stage time wondering whether or not this will be the closest they’ll ever come to holding…

Dell stumbles, almost drops to #3 in the top PC manufacturers Bad news for Dell. Despite the fact that it’s looking like IT spending is increasing, Dell is still suffering from lackluster sales. iSuppli, the company that tracks worldwide PC shipping, reports that in the ongoing battle for dominance in the PC marketshare, Dell has staggered, and almost slipped down to number three. The news isn’t all bad though, because as one company falls, another will rise. Surprisingly, the company that’s rising to the top happens to be Acer. In 4Q2009, Acer almost managed to top Dell in ...

Connecting the Quantum Dots to More Than Double Hard Drive Capacity [Science] Scientists have developed a new type of semiconductor structure—using microscopic crystals called magnetic quantum dots—that could more than double current hard drive storage capacity. That's just for starters. The crystals themselves aren't new; they've been around for over a decade in computer chips, solar cells, and LEDs, according to CBC News. This particular application, though, is unprecedented: The new work, reported today ...

Review: Alienware Aurora ALX Short version: The Aurora ALX is quite possibly the fastest computer I’ve ever used. It is in a word, amazing. Features: Factory water cooling Monolithic black case Functional and useful interior lighting system Active ...

i-tab electronic songbook Not too sure what took so long for an electronic songbook to be invented despite having the proper technology to do so after all this while - we're talking about the i-tab which comes with a 5" touchscreen display which is capable of displaying and scrolling through chords and lyrics in perfect synchronization as you play, functioning as a sort of musical teleprompter for guitar players. Equipped with 4GB of internal storage space, it ought to prove enough to tote ...
TUAW redux: The future of iPhone OS and Mac OS

TUAW redux: The future of iPhone OS and Mac OS One of the big topics of discussion yesterday in our TUAW back channel was this post from the New York Times Bits blog. In "Why can't PCs work more like iPhones," Bilton pointed out that the iPhone has given Apple a chance to build a new OS from the ground up. This is a familiar viewpoint to us here on TUAW. Last year, I asked whether the future of the Mac OS would turn ...
Yes we can make “hellabytes” an SI-recognized term

Yes we can make “hellabytes” an SI-recognized term All the hella-haters can spin on it. I want “hella” as an SI-recognized prefix along with “mega” and “kilo.” And that’s why I’m about to do something I rarely ever do: join a Facebook group. Point your little browser toward The Official Petition to Establish ‘Hella-’ as the SI Prefix for 10^27 if you want your storage space in 50 years to be measured in hellabytes and the universe’s weight in hellagrams. It came about as a sort of joke project by a student at UC Davis, ...

SK Telecom’s Android SIM prototype combines CPU, storage and OS into one (video) This is the future, we tell ya! Not the immediate future, mind you, as it's a humble prototype with no commercial intentions behind it, but it sure looks like the right direction for us to be moving in. SK Telecom has somehow fit a processing chip, memory, a gigabyte of flash storage and Google's Android OS onto the SIM you see above. The concept is pure genius -- you store your entire mobile environment on ...
X-Tube: Hanwa’s USB dongle makes PCs DTS-compatible
February 17, 2010 – 3:02 am | No Comment
X-Tube: Hanwa’s USB dongle makes PCs DTS-compatible Vacuum tubes are usually used in tube or valve amplifiers (electronic amplifiers) to boost the power of a signal. The technology has been around for decades, and vacuum tubes seem to be pretty enough for Hanwa Japan to announce [JP] the X-Tube today, a USB dongle that looks like one of those tubes and allows you to upgrade your computer with DTS sound. Also dubbed AS301DTS, the dongle glows in blue when in use (see above). You’ll need two more things to enjoy DTS sound on your ...

Windows Phone 7 Series: Everything Is Different Now [Windows Phone 7] It's astounding that until this moment, three years after the iPhone, the biggest software company in the world basically didn't compete in mobile. Windows Phone 7 Series is more than the Microsoft smartphone we've been waiting for. Everything's different now. Today, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft is publicly previewing Windows Phone 7 for the first time. The brand new, ...
