[Image via The Stub ] If you’ve been avidly following the Hollywood scuttlebutt this past week, you’ve probably heard of an event which is unfolding at this very moment: The 82nd Annual Academy Awards. We know how badly you guys want to be able to talk about the Oscars whilst chatting over your place of business’ water cooler, coffee pot or rodeo clown make-up station, so we’re here to help you understand the Awards ceremony in terms you’ll find easily understandable: The Oscars are the Spike TV Video Game Awards, but for movies. While the VGAs have scantily-clad, off-season Victoria’s Secret models hand out their awards, the Oscars assign that task to off-season actors , who spend a majority of their on-stage time wondering whether or not this will be the closest they’ll ever come to holding…

Darkworks SDK transforms 2D games into 3D games, no 3D TV required Well, wouldn't you know it? 3D seems to be the topic of conversation here at GDC , and Paris-based Darkworks is making a splash by announcing the availability of its TriOviz for Games SDK. In short, this magical software concoction is a post-process effect that allows standard 2D games to be transformed into 3D masterpieces... and you don't even need to buy a 3D television. OpenGL 4.0 catches up with DirectX11 With OpenGL 4.0, non-Windows platforms will finally have access to all the features of DirectX 11 (DX11) hardware. Tessellation is now available (it's the star feature of DX11) for game programmers, but there's also an integration of general purpose computing that is better than in DirectX 11. General purpose computing lets developer use the massive computing capabilities of GPUs for tasks that are not graphic (physics is a good example). DX11 has Direct Compute, ...

The Barnes & Noble eReader iPad App Is On the Way (But Will Apple Maim It?) [Apple] As specumalated in yesterday's Giz Explains, Barnes & Noble is reportedly coming out with an iPad version of their ebook app, which will, interestingly, include B&N's bookstore. Really? I'm not expressing shock at a Barnes & Noble ebook app on the iPad—they have one on the iPhone, after all, and an option to buy books in ...

Dell stumbles, almost drops to #3 in the top PC manufacturers Bad news for Dell. Despite the fact that it’s looking like IT spending is increasing, Dell is still suffering from lackluster sales. iSuppli, the company that tracks worldwide PC shipping, reports that in the ongoing battle for dominance in the PC marketshare, Dell has staggered, and almost slipped down to number three. The news isn’t all bad though, because as one company falls, another will rise. Surprisingly, the company that’s rising to the top happens to be Acer. In 4Q2009, Acer almost managed to top Dell in ...

Casio’s ultra-tough G’zOne Brigade going on sale tomorrow? WAAAAY back in November, Casio and Verizon showed off the G’zOne Brigade, an ultra-durable clamshell phone with a surprise QWERTY keyboard packed inside. “Push to talk!” they said. “It’s weatherproof!” they said. And then the radio went silent; nearly four months later, not so much as a release date had been mentioned. Well, it looks like the release might sneak up on us, with a shelf date as early as tomorrow. We just got a flurry of tips indicating as much, all of which came in within ...

Bravo to Epic Games for porting Unreal Engine 3 to the iPhone Don’t get mad at me— I wanted to go to GDC, but The Man said no. So now we’re relying on CNET to bring us word of Epic Games’ efforts to bring the Unreal Engine to the iPhone . You may not have even played Unreal for several years, but plenty of big games are based on the engine. Mass Effect and BioShock are based on versions of the engine, as is EA’s upcoming Medal of Honor . Just think: playing Unreal on your iPhone. It’s almost… ...
