Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Angry Birds Coming To Windows Phone 7 On April 6th If your Windows Phone 7 handset was one of the unfortunate few that got bricked by Microsoft’s little-update-that-couldn’t , you’re going to want to get that fixed quick. At the very latest, you’re going to want to have things all patched up by April 6th. Why? Because it’s Angry Birds Time! Rovio’s Peter Vesterbacka confirmed last week at Mobile World Congress that the Birds were comin’ to Windows Phone 7, but he couldn’t get too specific about the launch date. Microsoft went ahead and filled in the ...

Study: Cell Phone Radiation May Cause Brain Activity, Whatever That Means Do cell phones cause cancer? Some say yes . Some say no . Nobody knows. The frequencies and powers of the radiation used in them haven’t been in use long enough for us to get decent long-terms studies out of them. Sure, the FCC makes sure you’re not frying your cortex with clearly harmful emissions (talk radio doesn’t count), but it could be that after 30 or 40 years, we all get head cancer. Or we all get super powers. It could go either way. A new ...

Apple patent offers peek at E-Wallet icon… or does it? Patently Apple is running another of its excellent, exhaustively detailed listings of Apple's recently awarded patents. In the description of one of the awards, the site pointed out what they believe is an icon for an "E-Wallet" app, possibly pertaining to a Near Field Communications (NFC)-based electronic payment system. We've been hearing a lot about Apple's involvement with ISIS and NFC payments, so it seems likely that the drawing in this patent description could be pointing out the ...

Optimus 3D And Xperia Play On Pre-Order In UK For Over £500
February 21, 2011 – 5:23 pm | No Comment
Optimus 3D And Xperia Play On Pre-Order In UK For Over £500 This is just one of those early, unsubsidized, let’s-not-freak-out-yet prices, but still. £520 works out to nearly 850 of our anemic US dollars. What does Sony-Ericsson think this Play thing is, the PSP 2 ? And the Optimus 3D — it’s certainly a beast of a phone, but with the 3D effect not blowing us away and the market for that kind of thing rather limited, I’m not sure it’s going to move a lot of units without an 80% carrier subsidy. Hey, it happens. The prices ...
