Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Games Decreasing In Popularity On Android, Entertainment Apps On The Rise The mobile app ecosystem is growing so quickly – exponentially, even – that sometimes it’s hard to see the larger trends occurring in the space. To really gain insight, it helps to look back over a longer period of time, like a year for example, in order to take stock of the changes taking place. To that end, I reached out to mobile app search company Chomp , who kindly obligated my curiousity by packaging together its first ever annual app search analytics report. The report digs into ...

January 28, 2012 – 5:22 am | No Comment
Android Smartphone Round-Up: December/January Edition We took a break from the Android round-up in December because, well, to be honest I was on vacation. But January gave us a few extra smartphones and the holidays are over, so we’re back. What we’ve got for you today leans into more expensive turf, and unfortunately, our favorite Android devices for the past two months are also exclusively at Verizon, so Big Red subscribers should pay attention. Without further ado, these are our favorite December/January releases of the Android persuasion: The Samsung Galaxy Nexus , ...

Samsung 2011 Q4 earnings official: $42 billion in sales, $4.7 billion operating profit It might not be making as much money as the competition in Cupertino, but that doesn't mean Samsung isn't raking in cash at an astonishing clip. That represents over a 2 trillion won increase year over year. In all, it pulled in 47.3 trillion won ($42 billion) in sales, thanks ...

It’s About Time: HTC To Refocus Smartphone Efforts Around “Hero” Devices HTC has gotten to be remarkably good at churning out phone after phone these days, but it’s gotten to feel like each new release is too little too soon. Thankfully, the godfather of Android hardware has come to its senses, as revealed by Mobile Today . According to HTC UK head Phil Roberson, 2012 is going to be all about giving their customers “something special.” To that end, HTC plans to focus on a smaller number of “hero” smartphones and dial back their presence in the tablet ...

Steam Takes First Steps Into Mobile With iOS And Android Apps As a gamer with admittedly poor impulse control, the newly-released Steam app for iOS and Android has me very worried. On the one hand, it seems like an ideal way to to keep tabs on the popular gaming service on the go. On the other though, I could easily see myself going overboard on buying games I don’t need when I should be pretending to be a productive member of society. The Steam app sports a set of features that should be familiar to many a PC ...

App-maker Moonbot Gets An Oscar Nomination There’s been a lot of talk about the divide between Silicon Valley and Hollywood , but at least one upstart animation studio seems to have one foot comfortably in both worlds — Moonbot Studios , which was just nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Short. The film in question, “The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore,” was also released as an iPad app , and will be published a traditional book, too. Co-founder William Joyce is an established children’s author, and he first conceived the ...
