Gigabyte Codfish

Here’s a new phone from Asian cell phone provider Gigabyte that may not be the GSmart Android, but could be just as interesting.
This one is called the Codfish, and we don’t know much about it. According to the PointGPhone that we have in the photo, it is “very responsive” and “good manufacturing quality”. We do know that it does Android 1.6, has a 3.2 inch display, and a 5 megapixel camera.
Well, I’m sure if the Codfish is really ...

Thwart laptop thieves by shutting off your wi-fi

Most of us don’t think twice about lugging a $2000 object to a public place and then leaving it for five minutes to grab a coffee refill — with no other assurance that it won’t be stolen than that there are other people around. I’ve started being a bit more careful since laptop theft has gone up around here, but it’s just as easy to forget that laptop rustlers don’t just hang out in cafes. And if they’re savvy, they may even employ wireless signal trackers to ...

Some people may ask why a physics professor used liquid nitrogen to freeze and shatter a laptop against the floor, just to tell students that laptops were prohibited in class. Personally, I think that's cool, but I have another question:
What is Dr. Egon Spengler doing working as a physics professor at the University of Oklahoma?
Laptop-Spying School Accessed Webcams 42 Times; FBI Begins Investigation [Privacy]
Surely by now you've heard about the high school student suing Philadelphia's Lower Merion School District for remotely accessing his webcam. And maybe you read the Superintendent's response and thought, "well, maybe this whole business is getting blown out of proportion." It isn't.
According to a Washington Post report from early this morning, the school district has admitted to remotely activating its laptops' webcams forty-two times over the last 2 years. Now the FBI is involved, determining if the school district violated any wiretapping or ...
Samsung: Yep, we’re working on a Chrome OS netbook

In not-too-surprising, yet good-to-know-for-sure news, it seems that Samsung is indeed working on a netbook designed around Chrome OS . Now, what exactly that comprises I can’t tell you — my guess is they’re really just getting a cheap netbook ready to go with whatever Google announces when Chrome OS hits prime time. Or maybe they’ll use one of those neat (useless) transparent ones ? The specs are nothing crazy: 3G, 2GB of RAM to start, 64GB or more of SSD storage, probably a 10.1″ screen, and ...

These aren't the first touchscreen laptops Toshiba's dished out, but the U500-1EX is the latest, and has some nice specs (4GB of DDR3 RAM, 320GB HDD) for its low price.
At 13.3-inches, the Windows 7 machine has a neat-sounding LifeSpace app from Toshiba, which allows for thumbnail shortcuts on a bulletin board, and a faster way of searching for files with ReelTime.
Internally, it's running on an Intel Core i3-330 processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and has the option to upgrade the HDD to ...

After upgrading to Windows 7, some users saw a new warning message suggesting that they need to replace their laptops' batteries. Some screamed "bug," some shouted "conspiracy,' but Microsoft denies that anything's wrong. In an entry on Microsoft's MSDN blog, Windows division President Steven Sinofsky explains that the warning message is a new feature in Windows 7 and that's why some users are seeing it for the first time on laptops which appeared to run ...
Traveling with batteries and ordering gadgets online could soon get pricey

Here are two totally unrelated things I like to do: order gadgets and smartphones online, and travel with loads of spare batteries. Well, perhaps they’re not all that unrelated. Both offer a lot of convenience and save a good amount of cash, but with a new proposal from the U.S. Department of Transportation , that could all soon change. We’ve all seen exploding iPods, cell phones and laptops thanks to faulty Lithium-Ion batteries and connectors, so the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration wants to make air ...
New One Laptop Per Child uses John Lennon

I saw this ad for One Laptop for Child, and I couldn’t help but wonder how appropriate it is to use a deceased person’s image to advertise, even if it is for a charity.
Does anyone think that it is odd that One Laptop per Child is using John Lennon, who died a decade before the Internet was even brought to the public? I wonder what Paul and Ringo are thinking about this. I also wonder if Yoko had any say in this.
