Strategic Sharing: Zipcar Leads $13.7M Investment In Campus Car-Sharing Startup Wheelz
February 22, 2012 – 8:25 am | No Comment

Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Detroit-based Fontinalis…

Dolby introduces lighter, cheaper 3D glasses to better compete with RealD and IMAX
March 22, 2011 – 4:52 am | No Comment
Dolby introduces lighter, cheaper 3D glasses to better compete with RealD and IMAX Dolby has been working on getting the cost of its 3D glasses down since bringing Infinitec color shift technology to theaters back in '07 and it couldn't wait for CinemaCon 2011 next week before announcing the new models seen above. These should please theater operators by being cheaper than the old ones -- down to $12 or less per reusable pair from $17 last year and $27.50 the year before that -- and hopefully cinemagoers ...

Samsung HDTVs getting updated version of the Netflix Watch Instantly interface? The PlayStation 3 and Google TV recently got an updated version of Netflix’s Watch Instantly interface and now Samsung HDTVs compatible with Samsung Apps seem to be getting the latest interface too. According to reports, the latest interface appeared after a firmware upgrade on a UN46C6500 LCD HDTV and it now offers the ability to search through Netflix’s catalog directly on the device, though you still won’t be able to add DVDs to your queue. Since there isn’t ...

LG Optimus 2X review The world cried out for a dual-core smartphone and LG and NVIDIA answered the call. Actually, the world only ever dreamt about multicore mobile architectures up until late last year, but sometimes that's all it takes to get those zany engineers engineering. So here we are, in early February 2011, beholding the world's first smartphone built around a dual-core processor, the Optimus 2X. This is a landmark handset in more ways than one, however, as ...

UFC Files Lawsuit Againt Justin.tv As It Tries To Elmininate Illegal Online Streams Altogether UFC has continued its fight against copyright infringement by filing a lawsuit against Justin.tv , the video streaming Web site where, UFC alleges, people can watch its events for free. UFC takes issue with “Justin.tv’s repeated and ongoing failure to meaningfully address the rampant and illegal uploading of video of live Pay-Per-View UFC events by members and users of the Justin.tv website.” UFC had previously subpoenaed Justin.tv (and Ustream) for the names of people who had streamed events illegally. Everyone is in a tough spot here. Clearly ...
LG ST600 Smart TV Upgrader brings DLNA, apps, and a web browser to formerly dumb displays
December 30, 2010 – 2:47 am | No Comment
LG ST600 Smart TV Upgrader brings DLNA, apps, and a web browser to formerly dumb displays If you buy any of LG's latest HDTVs, you're pretty much assured it'll have a big sticker saying "Smart TV" somewhere along its fascia assuring you of its internet connectivity and compatibility. But, if you're still rocking some old school piece of visual tech that isn't yet past its "watch by" date, you'll be needing a set-top box of some kind to get on the web without leaving your couch. Naturally, LG would like to ...
Snapstick Brings The Entire Web To Your TV With A Snap Of The Wrist. Get it?
December 9, 2010 – 9:03 am | No Comment
Snapstick Brings The Entire Web To Your TV With A Snap Of The Wrist. Get it? Viewing Internet content on HDTV is a painfully tricky affair these days but Snapstick thinks they can succeed where others have crashed and burned. Forget Google TV , Boxee Box and Apple TV for a moment. Snapstick’s whole philosophy seems different and that’s where it might have a chance. Rather than relying on a box connected to the TV (Note: there’s still a box connected to the TV) for navigation and discovery either through a painful onscreen keyboard or a clumsy full size keyboard, content for Snapstick ...
LG Claims New LCD Display Has World’s Thinnest Bezel
November 3, 2010 – 7:30 pm | No Comment
LG Claims New LCD Display Has World’s Thinnest Bezel Thank you , LG. This time, you mean it . All this time we’ve been slimming down the distance between the front and the back of the display, and meanwhile we’ve got these huge, thick bezels surrounding the screen. I know some feel that a bezel is necessary in psychovisual terms, to help with contrast and so on, but multi-monitor displays benefit hugely from thin bezels, and it looks like LG is leading the pack . The bezel on this particular display, of which you see 9 ...
Upcoming Galaxy GeForce GTX 460 card to support WHDI streaming courtesy of Amimon

Upcoming Galaxy GeForce GTX 460 card to support WHDI streaming courtesy of Amimon Most of what we're seeing on the WHDI front has to do with getting basic HD video playback off of the laptop or out of the den and onto the TV, but video games are people too -- don't they deserve the same treatment? Galaxy seems to think so, and it's building Amimon's WHDI tech into its upcoming Galaxy GeForce GTX 460 WHDI Edition video card. A receiver adapter for plugging into your TV is ...
Nielsen survey shows high interest in 3DTV, low interest in paying for it right now
September 11, 2010 – 12:32 am | No Comment
Nielsen survey shows high interest in 3DTV, low interest in paying for it right now This year's hot new feature in HDTVs is 3D, but just as fast as the products have rolled out, complaints have come in the form of comments and editorials, citing the glasses, dearth of content and lack of interoperability between different manufacturer's TVs and glasses. Nielsen and the Cable & Television Association for Marketing have completed what they claim is the first comprehensive study including exposure to 3DTV content with qualitative focus ...
