Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Panasonic Lumix LX5 Gets New Guts, Lumix FX700 Gets 1080p [DigitalCameras] The Lumix LX5 follows the LX3, a camera that (rightfully) gave up the megapixel race for increased sensitivity. The LX5 goes even further, improving the 10MP CCD sensor and adding a new Leica Lens and powerful image processing engine. The LX5 has a super bright F2.0, 24mm Leica lens and 3.8x optical zoom (as opposed to the 2.0 zoom on the LX3). And it's picked up ...
TUAW review and giveaway: OtterBox Defender / Commuter for iPad

TUAW review and giveaway: OtterBox Defender / Commuter for iPad Right off the bat, let me get the record straight -- I am a huge fan of OtterBox cases. I've used them on my last two iPhones and had used them pre-iPhone on a number of handheld devices. If you're into leather or style, then you probably won't be excited about the design of OtterBox products. But if you're the type of person who wants to protect an investment in an expensive device, then OtterBox is for you. ...
First impressions: Viliv N5 Ultra Mini Mobile PC

First impressions: Viliv N5 Ultra Mini Mobile PC Viliv is at it again. This time around the Korean manufacturer is going after the clamshell market with the N5. The self-described Ultra Mini Mobile PC is really just that — a truly mobile PC. This form factor isn’t exactly new as I just looked at the main competitor, the UMID mbook bz , just a few months back so I’m actually curious if the N5 brings anything novel to the niche market. I’ve only had the handheld for a few hours now so what follows are ...
Trading up? Melt your old iPhone with a real-life DEATH RAY
June 26, 2010 – 8:03 am | No Comment
The poor iPhone. For whatever reason, it's just a blast to watch it get destroyed. (Case in point: will it blend?) Up above, though, you'll see one of the most impressive ways to do away with the handheld yet: a homemade "death ray." Someone took what looks like an older model of the iPhone and subjected it to a 65-inch Fresnel lens and then let the sun do the rest. The result? Well, let's just say that the iPhone knows how an ant under a magnifying glass feels now. Via ...

A guide to 3D display technology: its principles, methods, and dangers Whether you buy into the hype or not, it’s plain fact that 3D is everywhere these days. From movies and games to laptops and handhelds , pretty much every screen in the house is going to be 3D-capable in a year or so, even if you opt not to display any 3D content on it. Those of you who choose that path may stop reading now, and come back a little later when you change your mind. Because if you have kids or enjoy movies and games, ...
TUAW Review: Carcassonne finally, gloriously comes to the iPhone
June 5, 2010 – 11:25 am | No Comment
TUAW Review: Carcassonne finally, gloriously comes to the iPhone After from Small World, Carcassonne is one of the most anticipated designer board game apps to hit the App Store. It took a little longer than expected, but everything from the basic Carcassonne game is here. Nothing more, nothing less. There are no river tiles, no traders, no princess or dragon. It's completely easy to play, and the plethora of options - local or online human opponents, very well-created AI players and a new solitaire ...
Archos 7 Home Tablet shows why touchscreen quality is everything
June 1, 2010 – 9:22 pm | No Comment
Archos 7 Home Tablet shows why touchscreen quality is everything Archos just released its Archos 7 Home Tablet, an Android-running, low-cost Wi-Fi slab that can put the Internet in your hands for a mere $199. The price seems way too low, especially given the apparent quality of this attractive handheld device. However, it has one fatal flaw, turning our opinion of it from love at first sight to sheer loathing with the mere touch of a finger. In this high-tech world of Internet-connected devices, the key to ...
Assassin’s Creed 2, Dragon Age: Origins win Canadian game awards

Assassin’s Creed 2, Dragon Age: Origins win Canadian game awards We like to playfully rip on Canada every now and then (America's hat!), but we must admit that The Great White North knows how to make some quality games, evidenced by the winners at the inaugural Canadian Videogame Awards ceremony. While Game of the Year went to Bioware's Dragon Age: Origins, Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed 2 made out with the most awards, winning Best Console Game, Best Visual Arts, and Best Game Design, ...
AUO scores patent lawsuit decision over LG Display

AUO scores patent lawsuit decision over LG Display LG Display may want to be more careful where it aims those patent lawsuits next time, after a dispute it kicked off with AUO has lead to a finding by a U.S. District court that it actually violated AUO's patents and not the other way around. Say hello to patent Nos 6,778,160, 6,689,629, 7,125,157 and 7,090,506, covering "technologies help to improve response time, improve reliability of LCDs, solve the problem of defects in the displayed images, and provide a very ...
Carl Zeiss shooting for budding DSLR filmmaker audience with new cine lenses

Carl Zeiss shooting for budding DSLR filmmaker audience with new cine lenses Even if your interest in photography is fringe at best, you've probably heard the name Carl Zeiss. The optics company has planted its lenses all over the places, from DSLRs to numerous point-and-shoots, and now it's catering directly to our love of DSLR filmmaking. Ol' C. Z. took time at least week's NAB to unveil what it's dubbing "the world's first set of cine lenses designed especially for HDSLR cameras." The Compact ...
