Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Apple granted patent for handheld that recognizes your hands You could probably fill a book with Apple patent applications that never amounted to anything, but here's one that's at least been granted -- a "handheld device" that uses capacitive sensors to recognize your identity just by the way you hold it, and subsequently personalize the device's buttons and settings to your hand based on your user profile. That's all that's actually been patented here, but the general idea is a little more grand -- ...

Panasonic Toughbook U1 gets new sunlight-viewable screen, still solid to its Atom core Remember Panasonic's Toughbook CF-U1? Yeah, so it's been a while (2008, in fact) since it was unveiled and then reviewed, which is exactly why Panny thought the time had come to update the rugged UMPC. Its Toughbook U1 has the same magnesium alloy chassis -- we're told it's still the most rugged Toughbook of them all -- but has been updated with "enhanced sunlight viewability." It's no PixelQi display, ...

5 apps for nostalgia

5 apps for nostalgia Here's another entry in our "Five Apps For" series, which identifies five iPhone/iPod touch apps that fill a specific niche, appeal to a particular crowd, or cover an area of interest. Enjoy! As an aging child of the 70's and 80's (I'll be 40 in January), I'm feeling nostalgic for the past while cozying up to my own mortality. Call it a mid-life crisis, regression or what have you, but I'm thinking about the old days. ...

Chasing the Perfect Cup of Coffee Through Science [Coffee]

Chasing the Perfect Cup of Coffee Through Science [Coffee] This coffee sucks. It's the second cup I've made in a row. It's sour and grassy. It should taste like red grapes and strawberry. I know exactly how bad it is, and I haven't even tasted it yet. People accept scientific measurements as the truth about a lot of things. Mass. The temperature at which water freezes. The size of the earth. But it's hard to swallow the idea of scientifically measuring how something ...

40.1 million people are playing games on iDevices, 45% fine with in-app ads Here are two interesting stats about iOS gaming to round out your Monday. First up, a new industry survey says that 40.1 million people in the US are playing games on Apple's mobile devices -- that's over half of the 77 million strong total gaming audience. That's a huge market share, especially considering this platform has only existed for a few years. By comparison, Sony's PSP system only has an audience of around 18 million, and Nintendo's DS audience in the ...
