Command & Conquer coded in HTML5
January 24, 2012 – 9:57 pm | No Comment

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

June 8, 2010 – 8:16 am | No Comment
DJ Hero 2 brings two turntables and a microphone this Fall Prefer a turntable to a keytar? Then it looks like Activision has you covered -- it's just officially announced DJ Hero 2, which will be available sometime this Fall, and presumably be on hand at E3 next week. Unfortunately, it's not yet clear if there will actually be a new version of the turntable controller or not, but Activison has added a microphone to the equation, and it'll also be releasing the ...

Google TV: Who is the competition and what are they saying about it? The Google TV has landed and is already sending ripples through the marketplace, but what about all the companies already blending internet and TV? Whether they are already planning to work with the new initiative (Rovi), even more firmly staking a claim on their existing technology and vision for the connected TV (Microsoft, Yahoo), sounding like it's an option for the future (Samsung, VIZIO, Boxee) or already working on their own Android on TV projects ...

FIFA World Cup leaves Alan in its wake on UK sales chart 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa fiercely protected its top spot on the UK all-formats weekly sales chart for the third week in a row. Alan Wake saw the light of retail with a second place premiere, and according to Chart-Track, totaled only 1,000 fewer units sold than FIFA. Lost Planet 2, which found itself in third, was 12,000 units behind Wake (an Xbox 360 exclusive), despite being on two platforms and ...
iPad sales big on Ebay Internationally

iPad sales big on Ebay Internationally Sure, there was a delay with iPad International Sales, but if you are here in the United States, see it as a business opportunity. That’s right, if you have an iPad, you can probably get more than what you paid for it from another country. Isn’t this amazing how a scarce product can create such a demand. Remember the PS2? The Xbox 360? The Wii? Tickle Me Elmo? Let’s just get that iPad to other countries already. ...
Check out the ‘vue’ at this Florida Ritz-Carlton resort
April 28, 2010 – 7:19 pm | No Comment
Check out the ‘vue’ at this Florida Ritz-Carlton resort With airport security so unpredictable these days, it's just not safe to travel with your consoles anymore. So why travel at all? It's a question that The Ritz-Carlton resort in Naples, Fla. has tried to answer with the introduction of its new "vue." That's right -- it would seem that the "dazzling" views of the Gulf of Mexico just aren't engaging enough for today's vacationer, so the hotel has constructed a "virtual user experience." ...
Xbox 360 Slim to be announced at this year’s E3?
April 26, 2010 – 7:09 am | No Comment
Xbox 360 Slim to be announced at this year’s E3? If a notorious game industry news source is believed, Microsoft is announcing a redesigned Xbox 360 this year at E3. The systems will be physically smaller hence the slim name, but also sport a new predominantly black color scheme. The thought is a while Project Natal wouldn’t look so hot in front of a black TV and so the console is getting revamped ahead of Natal’s launch. Surfer Girl Strikes Back also mentions that MS will announce two 360 Natal bundles at this year’s show and she ...
Japanese hardware sales, April 12 – April 18: Dry spell edition

Japanese hardware sales, April 12 – April 18: Dry spell edition Poor, poor April. After a quarter of pretty enormous video game releases, we've seen a noticeable slowdown over the past 25 days. Normally, we'd relish the opportunity to get caught up on the surplus the past few months have brought us, but ... well, we miss the action! The excitement! The variety! The occasional disappointment! In an attempt to recapture these raw emotions, we've been forced to seek out other hobbies with even more frequent additions. Like, for instance, comic books. There's new ...
Peripheral Vision: X Scorch 360 split mouse controller
April 24, 2010 – 12:20 pm | No Comment
Peripheral Vision is the name of our ongoing sporadic journey into the wonderful, oft-terrifying world of third-party peripherals. Think of it as neither preview or review but rather a ... meditation on the curious object in question. Enjoy. After a lifetime of being disappointed by third-party peripherals, I've not come to expect much. Let's just say I've been hurt so many times that I'm thrilled when a controller doesn't feel like it was made out of old cardboard or has ...

You see that shot above? There's the night cycle, clear as day. And all it took was for one of the designers to double-click on the sun and press "delete." This just in: ...
The User’s Manifesto: in defense of hacking, modding, and jailbreaking
April 18, 2010 – 11:00 pm | No Comment
The User’s Manifesto: in defense of hacking, modding, and jailbreaking There’s a trend that’s been disturbing me lately. When the topic of modding or jailbreaking comes up — say, in the wake of the iPad announcement , or Sony’s restrictive PS3 update — there is an outcry. Who am I to tell Apple what’s best for their devices? How can I in good conscience urge others to void their warranties or break license agreements? And why should anyone care when only a small proportion of people hack or jailbreak their devices? These questions are natural, because a ...
