First Look: Tom Bihn Ristretto bag for iPad
June 26, 2010 – 1:06 pm | No Comment

I blame Steve Sande for my newest iPad-related purchase. Well, there’s a lot of things to blame Steve for, but it was his reviews of the Tom Bihn Western Flyer and Checkpoint Flyer that had me checking out the company he bought the bags from last year. Tom Bihn is based in Seattle and has the distinction of being among those rare companies that still makes its products in the U.S. using mostly U.S.-produced materials. Only a few components are sourced from overseas, but those parts are fully disclosed. Tom Bihn was also had gear designed specifically iPad right off the bat, announcing its offerings — The Ristretto and the Cache for iPad — just hours after the original iPad announcement. The US$110 Ristretto, which also comes in a larger size designed to hold a MacBook, is a vertical messenger bag with a padded area that is large enough to hold a netbook or an iPad. After having my iPad and accessories bounce around a larger bag for a few weeks, I caved and placed…

Japanese hardware sales, Feb. 1 – Feb. 7: Valentiney edition Most of the younger interns here at the Japanese Hardware Sales Chart institute have had their wills systematically broken down, turning them into unfeeling, number-crunching machines. Still, we think it's important to give them one day a year -- Valentine's Day -- where they're allowed to experience that saccharine emotion known as love. Of course, we don't allow them to experience it first-hand -- that could lead to all kinds of scandalous behavior. No, we simply show them cutscenes from our favorite love ...

Windows Phone 7 Series: Everything Is Different Now [Windows Phone 7] It's astounding that until this moment, three years after the iPhone, the biggest software company in the world basically didn't compete in mobile. Windows Phone 7 Series is more than the Microsoft smartphone we've been waiting for. Everything's different now. Today, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft is publicly previewing Windows Phone 7 for the first time. The brand new, ...

EA Hasbro games sold eight million units at retail in 2009 Not since The Bushwhackers have we seen such an excellent pairing of two entities. EA and Hasbro's partnership has paid off in dividends, as a recent press release boasts that eight million copies of Hasbro titles have been sold in the US alone at retail last year. The eight million figure applies only to retail releases, not digitally distributed titles across consoles and mobile -- which admittedly have also been successful. ...

Schappert clarifies EA’s sweeping DLC and online strategy During this week's quarterly earning's report, EA COO John Schappert answered an investor question with a somewhat vague but potentially far-reaching comment regarding the publisher's future strategy for implementing online functionality into its games. "In fiscal 2011 [from April 31, 2010 to March 31, 2011], every one of EA's releases will have an online component, both downloadable content and online play," Schappert said, according to a VG247 report. CFO Eric Brown then cited Mass Effect 2's ...
Japanese hardware sales, Jan. 11 – Jan. 18: Everyone loses edition

Japanese hardware sales, Jan. 11 – Jan. 18: Everyone loses edition Well, we guess that answers that, huh? No, but seriously folks -- though Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep is still selling fairly strong, the PSP lost half of its sales power since last week. In fact, every piece of gaming hardware went into a free fall between January 11 and January 18, leading us to once again wonder what the hell is going on over there. Did a really good book come out, or ...
Xbox 360 Transforms Into the All Spark [Mods]
January 21, 2010 – 2:39 pm | No Comment
Xbox 360 Transforms Into the All Spark [Mods] An All Spark Xbox 360 seems like a clever idea, that is, until your TV turns into a robot during a Golden Girls marathon and your head is decapitated by a very strange amalgamation of pop culture motifs. Though this mod looks impressive, its construction was relatively simple. A plywood box was coated with self-hardening clay, and this clay was carved with various glyphs ...
New Naughty Bear trailer stuffed with violence
January 16, 2010 – 5:01 am | No Comment
New Naughty Bear trailer stuffed with violence 505 Games has released another trailer for A2M's upcoming Xbox 360 and PS3 project, Naughty Bear. Like the first screens released, the trailer pretty much conforms to what you would imagine. In the grand tradition of taking eternally cute cliches and making them violent -- think Happy Tree Friends, Conker's Bad Fur Day -- the trailer features Naughty Bear gunning down another bear as it flees in terror. The cute violence concept isn't exactly new in games -- Fairytale Fights ...

Xbox 360 storage locker can store anything, really While newPCgadgets.com has chosen to product seen above the name "Xbox 360 Security Locker," you could conceivably store just about any gaming paraphernalia you might happen to have lying around. This point is actually driven home by the product image itself, which clearly shows several PlayStation 2 games being stored in the locker. For $39.95, the locker holds four controllers and 15 games, or zero controllers and 30 games or whatever you can cram into ...

Shine On, You Crazy Gadgets [Gadgets]
January 1, 2010 – 3:35 am | No Comment
Shine On, You Crazy Gadgets [Gadgets] I spent this decade hunting for the perfect gadget. I never thought I would end up with tech as good as this. But it's not the tech that interests me the most anymore. In 2000, I was just another kid out of college in Boston escaping to the Golden State's climate and opportunity. The perfect job didn't present itself for six long months; four months later, it burst with the bubble. It's not important what the job was. I was fired not just because ...
