Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Nintendo Wii U
June 12, 2011 – 9:53 am | No Comment
Nintendo Wii U E3 2011 was very exciting, and there were a lot of very good demos and announcements. However, it is fair to say that for a lot of people, including myself, Nintendo was the most innovative hardware company this year. Its upcoming Nintendo Wii U and the new controller have made headlines, but after coming back from E3, I found that a number of people were confused about some details, so I thought that gathering the information in one place, would help. ...
Move over, Wii U: iPad gets dual-screen gaming first

Move over, Wii U: iPad gets dual-screen gaming first The Wii U has a neat trick: a controller with a touchscreen that can show something different on it than what's on the TV. But you know, it's getting beaten to the punch not by Microsoft or Sony, but by Apple.
Review: The Nintendo 3DS, The Next Step In Portable Gaming Evolution

Review: The Nintendo 3DS, The Next Step In Portable Gaming Evolution Nintendo has long defined the rules of childhood. In Nintendo’s world, logic and whimsy are intermixed and there is always a bigger boss and another castle. We learned from Nintendo that you can always turn your enemy’s weapons against them and that evolution is a fact. We learned that the best stories are played out in your head and even when you don’t have a lot of friends you at least always have Mario. Nintendo also defined video gameplay. Their NES console, while seemingly underpowered, sat under ...
TUAW’s Daily App: Max and the Magic Marker
March 25, 2011 – 7:07 am | No Comment
TUAW’s Daily App: Max and the Magic Marker Max and the Magic Marker is a really incredible game. It's won awards everywhere, and now it's available from EA on iOS for iPhone and iPad. Essentially, the game is a platformer with Max having to navigate the weird game world by moving and jumping around. But the twist is he also has a magic marker that can be used to draw real-world objects that he can physically interact with. When you combine Max's platforming with the physics-based items ...
New Zelda: Skyward Sword Trailer
March 3, 2011 – 1:16 am | No Comment
New Zelda: Skyward Sword Trailer Nintendo has released a new trailer for Skyward Sword, the next Zelda game for Wii . I have to say, it’s looking better than it did at E3 , but maybe that’s because it’s not being controlled live. I do have faith that Nintendo will come up with quite a few interesting sword dynamics — their ingenuity is unlimited when they set their minds to it. Not exactly looking stunning graphics-wise, but we all knew that was going to be the case. Read more ...

PlayOn Officially Rolls Onto Android, Brings Netflix And Hulu With It Given what Netflix has said so far, we know that Netflix for Android is coming… eventually . Even then, Netflix is still being a bit mysterious about which devices it’ll work on (though given their recent Qualcomm partnership, “things running a Snapdragon CPU” is a good guess.) In the meantime, there’s a work around of sorts: PlayOn . After months of beta testing, PlayOn for Android is now available. The catch: while the app is free, the service is not ($39.99 for the first year/$19.99 each year ...
iPhone mini to be half the size of iPhone 4?
February 14, 2011 – 12:14 am | No Comment
iPhone mini to be half the size of iPhone 4? Rumors of a smaller iPhone, an iPhone mini if you will, have been going around ever since the iPhone was originally launched and now folks over at the Wall Street Journal have added fuel to the fire by stating that folks familiar with the matter claim to have seen a device that is about half the size of the iPhone 4 and is codenamed the N97. If the rumors are true, this iPhone mini will be only about ...
Slice it for iOS and Android
January 17, 2011 – 5:36 am | No Comment
Slice it for iOS and Android While I was playing around with some new Apps on the Android, I was able to find Slice It. Slice It is a new game where the user has to slice a shape into a perfect geometric areas. For example, the first is a square that has to be cut in half. Sounds easy? It isn’t. Eventually, you will have to cut other shapes in thirds, fourths, or levels that I haven’t got to yet. And the shapes ...

Check out this Wii laptop
January 1, 2011 – 2:46 pm | No Comment
I think we all know that Ben Heck has created some interesting mods like a laptop for an airplane, but he is very famous for gaming mods. I am surprised that he did not create this, a Wii laptop. It was created by Shock Slayer, a member at Mod Retro. You can watch him (presumably) explain it in the video. He made it out of parts found at an electronics store except for the SunDriver, and he has a SATA HDD for all the games. Apparently, all ...
