Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Japanese hardware sales, Feb. 1 – Feb. 7: Valentiney edition

Japanese hardware sales, Feb. 1 – Feb. 7: Valentiney edition Most of the younger interns here at the Japanese Hardware Sales Chart institute have had their wills systematically broken down, turning them into unfeeling, number-crunching machines. Still, we think it's important to give them one day a year -- Valentine's Day -- where they're allowed to experience that saccharine emotion known as love. Of course, we don't allow them to experience it first-hand -- that could lead to all kinds of scandalous behavior. No, we simply show them cutscenes from our favorite love ...

Windows Phone 7 Series: Everything Is Different Now [Windows Phone 7] It's astounding that until this moment, three years after the iPhone, the biggest software company in the world basically didn't compete in mobile. Windows Phone 7 Series is more than the Microsoft smartphone we've been waiting for. Everything's different now. Today, at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Microsoft is publicly previewing Windows Phone 7 for the first time. The brand new, ...

Schappert clarifies EA’s sweeping DLC and online strategy During this week's quarterly earning's report, EA COO John Schappert answered an investor question with a somewhat vague but potentially far-reaching comment regarding the publisher's future strategy for implementing online functionality into its games. "In fiscal 2011 [from April 31, 2010 to March 31, 2011], every one of EA's releases will have an online component, both downloadable content and online play," Schappert said, according to a VG247 report. CFO Eric Brown then cited Mass Effect 2's ...

Kratos casemod can bring ‘God of War’ to your desktop… if you really want that Well, this is disturbingly creative. Seriously, is there much more to say about this Kratos casemod? Well, Greek mythology and video game fanatics alike should be pleased yet horrified with this one. We certainly were. Video is after the break. ...

Ainol V8000HDV PMP Supports 1280p Video Playback With everybody jumping on the HD bandwagon nowadays, the Ainol V8000HDV looks like it might be well received, thanks to its 1280p playback support. Of course, it wouldn’t make all that much difference on the device’s 4.3-inch 800 x 480 screen, but thanks to the magic of HDMI-output, you can play the video on a HD LCD display that supports 1280p. The V8000HDV will sport 16GB of flash storage, though we ...

Japanese hardware sales, Jan. 11 – Jan. 18: Everyone loses edition Well, we guess that answers that, huh? No, but seriously folks -- though Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep is still selling fairly strong, the PSP lost half of its sales power since last week. In fact, every piece of gaming hardware went into a free fall between January 11 and January 18, leading us to once again wonder what the hell is going on over there. Did a really good book come out, or ...
PS3 finally properly hacked?
January 23, 2010 – 6:15 am | No Comment
PS3 finally properly hacked? In a post titled "Hello hypervisor, I'm geohot," hacker George Hotz (already known in the iPhone community) has made a strong claim: that he has cracked the PS3. The system has remained (mostly) uncompromised for over three years now, with a few exceptions here and there. But, this one pledges full read/write access to the entire system memory and complete control over the processor -- ...

Yes, it does look different than what you see from the console version, but it bears a strong resemblance to the PSP version. Anyway, if you are a big GTA fan, then you can shell out $10 for this App and have hours of fun. Source Related PostsStar ...
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Hits the App Store [IPhone Apps]
January 18, 2010 – 12:10 am | No Comment
Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Hits the App Store [IPhone Apps] The iPhone's got its first GTA title, and it looks pretty great. As teased before, this is a top-down GTA, and it's a near-direct port of the Nintendo DS version, albeit with better graphics, and more awkward controls. Touch Arcade's had some time to run/jack/drive/murder their way around the game a little bit, and here's what they noticed: • The graphics are much better than they looked in the early screenshots, falling closer to the PSP version of the game than ...
