Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Review: The Nintendo 3DS, The Next Step In Portable Gaming Evolution
March 27, 2011 – 6:24 am | No Comment
Review: The Nintendo 3DS, The Next Step In Portable Gaming Evolution Nintendo has long defined the rules of childhood. In Nintendo’s world, logic and whimsy are intermixed and there is always a bigger boss and another castle. We learned from Nintendo that you can always turn your enemy’s weapons against them and that evolution is a fact. We learned that the best stories are played out in your head and even when you don’t have a lot of friends you at least always have Mario. Nintendo also defined video gameplay. Their NES console, while seemingly underpowered, sat under ...
Optimus 3D And Xperia Play On Pre-Order In UK For Over £500

Optimus 3D And Xperia Play On Pre-Order In UK For Over £500 This is just one of those early, unsubsidized, let’s-not-freak-out-yet prices, but still. £520 works out to nearly 850 of our anemic US dollars. What does Sony-Ericsson think this Play thing is, the PSP 2 ? And the Optimus 3D — it’s certainly a beast of a phone, but with the 3D effect not blowing us away and the market for that kind of thing rather limited, I’m not sure it’s going to move a lot of units without an 80% carrier subsidy. Hey, it happens. The prices ...

How to Remove DRM from iTunes Video Purchases and Rentals [ITunes] We've looked at removing DRM from iTunes movies and TV shows on Windows, but what about Mac OS X? Here's how to rip out the DRM and turn that copy-protected M4V file into a regular old MP4 on your Mac. Wired's How-To Wiki points to a piece of software called ...
PlayStation Phone torn apart, found to not contain actual PlayStations

PlayStation Phone torn apart, found to not contain actual PlayStations What must surely be the industry's worst-kept secret just got even further out of the closet with a new suite of pictures showing not the outside but the inside. After all, we've already seen the outside at every possible angle, even in motion playing games. TGBus is the source here again, its disembodied hands apparently completely bored with actually playing games, so they broke out the ...

Report: Playstation Phone Is Based On the PSPgo, Will Go On Sale This Spring We’ve spent quite a few posts on Sony’s Playstation Phone in the last few months, and today the Asahi Shimbun (one of Japan’s biggest newspapers) is reporting [JP] that the device will be released in spring next year. Not a big surprise , but what’s interesting is that it will hit Europe and the US first, if the report is to be believed. The Asahi says that Japan will probably get the device, too. Technically, the phone will be based on the PSPgo but will have a ...
Sony Drops Even More Hints About Possible PSP Phone (But Doesn’t Want To Confuse Consumers)

Sony Drops Even More Hints About Possible PSP Phone (But Doesn’t Want To Confuse Consumers) More hints—even you can even call them that—about a possible “PSP phone,” however that manifests itself. Kazuo Hirai, the top gentleman over at Sony Computer Entertainment, has said that if Sony were to create such a device it’d be very important not to confuse people about its capabilities, or even its purpose. “We don’t want gamers to be asking, what’s the difference between that and a PSP,” said Hirai. The speculation surrounding a “PSP phone” has been ongoing for too long now. Will it be a PSP ...

EA Mobile Drops Android Game Sale Just in Time For The Holidays While companies like Nintendo and Sony have long been leading the pack when it comes to mobile gaming, up and coming smartphone platforms are taking much of the market share away from these companies. Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android, for example, have been gaining a ton of momentum when it comes to mobile gaming with titles like Angry Birds largely becoming house hold names. With such success, several major game developers are making the jump from traditional ...

PlayStation Phone ‘Zeus Z1′ caught on video again, this time you can actually see it Wow guys, we just spotted a new video of the PlayStation Phone, codenamed Zeus Z1, and this time we get a long, loving look at the entire device -- a refreshing contrast to last time's blurry tease. In addition to appreciating just how fat this phone is, and just how real it is, you can clearly see a "PlayStation" icon, which should hopefully put to rest any doubts that this phone will actually ...
Helmets Are a Must For the 40km/hr Segway [Video]

Helmets Are a Must For the 40km/hr Segway [Video] How to make the Segway less dorky? If you're not Steve Wozniak; can't afford Colorware, or you're money-rich thanks to your city tours business, the only other way is to mod it with larger wheels for topspeeds of 40km/hr. A normal Segway, with its trolley-sized wheels, zooms at 20km/hr (12.5 miles), but when this chap replaced the wheels with something resembling wagon wheels, that's when the fun began. [...
