Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Playstation Move may be coming in July
May 25, 2010 – 3:03 pm | No Comment
Playstation Move may be coming in July I remember posting that the Sony Playstation Move was scheduled for release in September, but recent information has surfaced saying it is due as early as July. I am assuming that this is made in response to Project Natal’s early release date, and perhaps the Move is planned to make such a huge splash at E3 that people will want it, badly. I’m planning on being at E3, and they had better let me try it out. ...

Check out the ‘vue’ at this Florida Ritz-Carlton resort With airport security so unpredictable these days, it's just not safe to travel with your consoles anymore. So why travel at all? It's a question that The Ritz-Carlton resort in Naples, Fla. has tried to answer with the introduction of its new "vue." That's right -- it would seem that the "dazzling" views of the Gulf of Mexico just aren't engaging enough for today's vacationer, so the hotel has constructed a "virtual user experience." ...

Japanese hardware sales, April 12 – April 18: Dry spell edition Poor, poor April. After a quarter of pretty enormous video game releases, we've seen a noticeable slowdown over the past 25 days. Normally, we'd relish the opportunity to get caught up on the surplus the past few months have brought us, but ... well, we miss the action! The excitement! The variety! The occasional disappointment! In an attempt to recapture these raw emotions, we've been forced to seek out other hobbies with even more frequent additions. Like, for instance, comic books. There's new ...

Saturday Short Film: The Anachronism [Films] Katie and Sebastian are just two children who love to explore. They're fascinated by creatures, plants, and their respective taxonomies. They're charming and relatable! And then there's the giant mechanical squid. I won't ruin the short for you; The Anachronism is more than worth the 15 minutes you need to set aside to watch it. It's haunting, and evokes the best elements of the Steampunk (...

Trine gets free DLC with Steam patch, Frozenbyte ‘not sure’ if it’s heading to PS3 This weekend, while you were working on the wizard outfit that will finally complete your cosplay group's Trine collective, Steam was busy updating the PC version of the game with free content. According to the Steam news page, Trine received a free DLC level named "Path to New Dawn" as a post-completion bonus this past Sunday. Additionally, a handful of minor updates were made to the game itself, ranging from new information on "experience and ...

The User’s Manifesto: in defense of hacking, modding, and jailbreaking

The User’s Manifesto: in defense of hacking, modding, and jailbreaking There’s a trend that’s been disturbing me lately. When the topic of modding or jailbreaking comes up — say, in the wake of the iPad announcement , or Sony’s restrictive PS3 update — there is an outcry. Who am I to tell Apple what’s best for their devices? How can I in good conscience urge others to void their warranties or break license agreements? And why should anyone care when only a small proportion of people hack or jailbreak their devices? These questions are natural, because a ...
Light Beam coffee table looks ready to explode with light

Light Beam coffee table looks ready to explode with light The Light Beam coffee table is packed with thousands of little LED lights, lights that are able to have their colors changed on the fly. Made of reclaimed teak packed in resin, it was apparently inspired by railway sleepers. But to me it just looks like a table from the future, if in the future we want our tables to be the center of attention in whatever room they've been placed in. There's no word on ...

GameStop: Console shortages likely not fixed until summer On the same conference call earlier this week in which it talked about its new rewards program, GameStop Executive VP of Merchandising, Tony Bartel, said that stores currently experiencing Wii and PlayStation 3 shortages probably won't find relief very soon. While the retailer is always bugging Sony and Nintendo for more units, Bartel said that GameStop "could sell a lot more hardware than ...
