February 22, 2012 – 8:25 am | No Comment

Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. GUSS--which stands for Ground Unmanned Support Surrogate--has GPS sensors, camera sensors, and can be operated in either fully autonomous mode or via a Wii-style remote control steering wheel. Mega64 tickles Dracula’s rib with Simon’s Quest parody As Castlevania: Lords of Shadow approaches, Mega64 celebrates the series with a tribute to the crystal-tradingest, corpse-huntingest game in the series, Simon's Quest. The "villagers" are as incomprehensible in real life as in the game, but one "extra" still manages to steal the show. [Thanks Kevin!]

App Review: Send fantastical armies into battle with Ex Illis on your iPhone (i)Pawn can turn your iPhone into a board game playing surface, but what if you want to expand your battles onto a much bigger playing field, one with mages and cavalry and archangels and big monsters? Then your best option is Ex illis, a new game that uses your iPhone or iPad as a game computer (technically, the "Rule Keeper software") while you act as general and overlord and maneuver your many ...

Richard Garriott’s next game goes ‘back to my roots,’ but in social media Portalarium founder, Ultima creator and no-foolin' spaceman Richard Garriott delivered the keynote at Fantastic Fest's inaugural Fantastic Arcade event in Austin today. After giving the assembled audience his personal history, he offered a hint about where he plans to go with Portalarium (which is evidently both a company and game name). Displaying a slide about going "back to my roots," Garriott said his company planned to make "AAA games, meaning the games we find ...
Microsoft joins Apple in stance against Blu-ray

Microsoft joins Apple in stance against Blu-ray Apple has a surprising ally in its campaign of apathy against Sony's Blu-ray disc format. Microsoft, of all companies, has also stepped out with a passive-aggressive stance against the standard, as UK head of Xbox gaming head Steven McGill says that "Blu-ray is going to be passed by as a format." He says that Microsoft was right to stick with the older DVD format for its game consoles, and that with the rise of streaming content and ...
Fan-made Pokemon Apokelypse trailer is long, long overdue

Fan-made Pokemon Apokelypse trailer is long, long overdue All the components -- they'd been there all along. Fan-made trailers have become increasingly popular over the years, as has Nintendo's monster-catching franchise. Why didn't we anticipate that a group (in this case, Ki-Voltage Productions) could merge the two trends with delightful results?
Halo: Reach stats and upcoming tweaks outlined by Bungie

Halo: Reach stats and upcoming tweaks outlined by Bungie Bungie's first Weekly Update since the launch of Halo: Reach included some startling statistics regarding the amount of time we've already thrown at the game's armor-clad feet. As of last Friday, over 31 million matchmaking games had already been played, over 78 billion credits had been earned and over 953 and 1,365 years had been poured into the game's matchmaking and campaign modes, respectively. We shudder to think how those figures expanded over the weekend. Bungie also ...

PlayStation Move gets broken down — so easy, an end-user could do it Another week, another well-detailed tear down from the kids at iFixit. Blessed with an eight out of ten on the repairability index, the PlayStation Move was said to be one of the easiest devices yet to break down and reassemble, so there's a good chance that any novice DIYer with a steady hand and a Phillips screwdriver could accomplish what's shown in the link below. No huge surprises were found once the PCB's clothing ...

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is Reaching towards comedy Well, you must have seen this coming -- almost all of this week's comics make pithy observations at the expense of Halo: Reach. If you're sick of reading about Bungie's send-off of the Covenant-brutalizing series, you might want to skip this particular Wrapup. Then again, if you do, you might miss out on the one or two comics that aren't about Reach. Decisions, decisions!
