Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Roku’s Streaming Stick Makes Your Dumb TV Much Smarter
January 4, 2012 – 10:49 am | No Comment
Roku’s Streaming Stick Makes Your Dumb TV Much Smarter Smart TVs are great and all — who doesn’t want a dash of WiFi with their daily dose of reality television? — but the segment will face challenges in the market. For one, a $49 Roku LT is a much better value proposition than a $1,000+ smart TV. Secondly, the hardware moves at such a rapid pace that even with solid software updates, your smart TV will likely be outdated much sooner than you’re ready to buy a new one. But even with the hardships to be ...

Disaster Report creator working on new IP for Vita and PS3 The creator of Disaster Report 4, Kazuma Kujo, may have suffered a small setback when his game was canceled following the earthquake in Japan last year due to an abnormally slow production process. But that little hitch hasn't turned him off of game development for good: he reports via Twitter that his new studio at developer Granzella is hard at work on a new title for both the PS3 and the PS Vita. Kujo ...
Amazon discounts select PS3 peripherals, active games

Amazon discounts select PS3 peripherals, active games We don't mean these games will make you start taking hikes or playing bocce ball in the park or something. These are games Amazon has classified as active -- they require more input from the player than simply mashing a button or d-pad. Sometimes you have to, like, stand up to play these games. Amazon's discounting Just Dance 3, the LittleBigPlanet 2 Move bundle, Zumba Fitness ... and Rocksmith? Rocking out counts as ...
Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is saying goodbye
January 1, 2012 – 8:43 am | No Comment
Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is saying goodbye Saying goodbye is, when speaking in terms of someone you care about, probably the most difficult emotional interaction two human beings can share. It isn't so much the idea that you're never going to see this person again, because chances are that's not true. What hurts is knowing that someone who has been a staple of your life for years will no longer be there in a communal sense, that the companionship you've grown so accustomed to will be missing. When you care ...
Fallout: New Vegas designer makes his own unofficial mod

Fallout: New Vegas designer makes his own unofficial mod Among the modders eagerly tinkering away at Fallout: New Vegas, arguably "correcting" what they see as deficiencies in the original design, is ... lead designer J.E. Sawyer. Sawyer has developed an optional patch for the PC version, which reduces the level cap to 35, halves XP acquisition, cuts water and food drop rates, and tweaks a bunch of other variables, all detailed on Sawyer's Formspring. You can download the mod here....
The Metal Gear Solid snakeskin 3DS is not to be eaten
December 29, 2011 – 10:51 am | No Comment
The Metal Gear Solid snakeskin 3DS is not to be eaten Despite its subtitle, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater should not encourage you to consume the snakeskin-embossed Nintendo 3DS coming out alongside the game in Japan. For starters, the device is a piece of electronics, and on top of that it's a rare, cool-looking limited edition 3DS. Konami has yet to give the 3DS a full reveal, but the above image was teased via Hideo Kojima's Twitter account, like most things MGS these days. We'll ...
The morning after: PlayStation Vita sales go cold during first full week in Japan

The morning after: PlayStation Vita sales go cold during first full week in Japan It's hard to set much store by early sales performance, particularly after the evergreen 3DS faced such a rocky road. Nevertheless, the Vita's latest stats do look disappointing for such a highly anticipated -- not to mention high-quality -- console: after shifting a remarkable 321,000 units during its first two days on sale in Japan, it could only muster 72,500 in the whole week between December 19th and Christmas Day. In comparison, the PS3 sold 76,000 units during ...
PlayStation Vita design rooted in the Sony Walkman

PlayStation Vita design rooted in the Sony Walkman We spent years carrying around cassette tapes, then another bunch of years carrying around compact discs, and most of that time said media formats were played through one of Sony's various Walkman devices. It looks like the Japanese hardware company is looking to recapture some of its past success by employing the man who designed the original Walkman to put together the company's latest handhled: the PlayStation Vita. When the US PlayStation Blog descended upon Japan for the Vita's recent launch, ...

3DS sales exceed 4M in Japan, Mario sells over 2M games More 3DS sales figures coming right at you: According to data from publisher Enterbrain, the 3DS has now exceeded sales of four million units in Japan (as expected), wrapping up the week leading into Christmas with 510,629 systems sold. That's an increase of 39 percent over the last week, which also saw the 3DS outselling the newer and more expensive PlayStation Vita by about 13 percent. Mario achieved an accompanying milestone (according to ...

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is a message in a bottle Look, we're gonna level with you: We haven't actually written anything this weekend. All the posts that went up today were written in advance, as were the posts going up tomorrow. Don't get us wrong, we love you guys to pieces, but we also love our families and the massive feasts they provide during the holidays. Seriously, you guys have no idea how good these twice-baked potatoes are. So! Think of this post as a time capsule, preserving our favorite webcomics from ...
