Aliens: Colonial Marines delayed to February 2013 on 360/PS3/PC, Wii U date to be revealed later

Aliens: Colonial Marines launches on February 12, 2013, Sega announced this morning. The Gearbox Software-developed game was previously given a “fall 2012″ launch window, and was planned as a Wii U hardware launch title (the game is also planned for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC), though no hard date was ever given before. In fact, despite the February 12 date announcement, the game’s Wii U version still doesn’t have a date. “A release date for the announced Wii U version will be revealed at a later time,” the press release reads.

Upset? That’s understandable, but Sega’s hoping to deflect some of that rage with a new trailer, which we’ve dropped just above.

The folks over at Gearbox Software have been busy with a lot more than designing fancy collector’s editions, according to Borderlands 2 producer Matt Charles. Answering fan-submitted twitter questions on the PlayStation Blog, Charles addressed several technical problems suffered by Borderlands – by and large, the news is positive.

Voice chat issues that plagued the first game, for instance, are currently being worked on and the system “will be working for everyone when the game launches.” Charles also said that while it’s “too early for me to give any final numbers,” Borderland 2’s framerate will “see an improvement over the first game.”

He also mentioned the upgraded user interfaces we’ve talked about before, and that players will now automatically pick up ammo and currency dropped by felled villains: “There’s a lot more useful data for gear comparison and also more descriptive text on the item cards as well. Having said that, the best way to know what a gun does is to use it.”

Scotland Yard detected on iOS

The classic board game Scotland Yard is ready to be discovered now as a universal iPad and iPhone app on the iOS App Store. Faithfully based on the classic game of cat and mouse, which has sold over four million copies, the title tasks a group of detectives to hunt down Mister X somewhere in London.

The game supports local, bluetooth or game center. In local play, unlike the original board game, Mister X and the other detectives can be controlled by the computer. The AI is the feature that makes this app worth it for anyone that enjoyed the original game. Players can focus on the task of tracking Mister X (or becoming him) through the subways, on the buses and tracking taxis against some worth adversaries and compatriots (who you don’t have to host at your place).

Lionhead listing for ‘MMO-like title for next generation consoles’

Lionhead’s latest job post brings up two salient points:

That listing for a multiplayer level designer with “a deep understanding of online multiplayer games” may encompass more than a simple FPS title with online capabilities.
Microsoft could be looking to bring MMOs to its console market in a big way.

The most recent want ad, spotted by Superannuation and since removed, described the potential game as an “MMO-like title” and an original IP for the “future generation of platforms.” It “will be an RPG-based game with a radical new take on how co-operative and multiplayer gameplay feeds into the experience, while blending online and single-player into one complete experience,” the listing read, as reported by MCV.

The title “will have a complex progression system, multiple routes through the campaign and an MMO-like multiplayer experience that will affect the outcome of the player experience, and many other attributes surrounding their profile (such as the environment and the outcome of certain actions).” Superannuation notes that it was labeled as a multithreaded RPG with four-player co-op.

Lionhead’s specific use of “MMO-like” and the description’s emphasis on a “radical new” genre leaves the game’s direction open to interpretation, while nodding at the style of former creative lead Peter Molyneux.

MMOs can be a big gamble, even for an established studio, and especially if its audience is tethered to a single console unfamiliar with the genre as a whole. Good luck, Lionhead. You may need it.

Lightning’s story finally hits Final Fantasy XIII-2

It seems to come up in every announcement of other FFXIII-2 DLC – and it’s about the person on the game’s box – so we’re glad to finally see “Lightning’s Story: Requiem of the Goddess” arrive today in North America.

In this episode, you play out a battle between Lightning and Caius, and get the opportunity to unlock Lightning for use in the main game … which Square recommends you finish before playing the DLC. It’s a bit of a catch-22. Also out today is “Snow’s Story: Perpetual Battlefield,” a Coliseum battle with Snow that also unlocks him.

These two episodes mark the end of Final Fantasy XIII-2 DLC, but Square is ending on a high note by releasing them alongside a set of 16 new costumes for Mog.

Must See HDTV (May 14th – 20th)

This week we’re completely overrun by season finales — if there’s a winter show that you watch that is still airing, it’s a safe bet that it will be wrapping up its run this week. Check after the break break for the dates and times on those as well as NBA and NHL playoffs action plus Blu-ray and videogame releases (we couldn’t ignore Diablo 3), but there’s just one finale we’re highlighting this week.

Even with the good news that NBC has ordered up (at least) 13 more episodes for next season, we’ll be sad to see Greendale’s study group leave for the summer. Season three wraps up Thursday night with an oddly disjointed three episode finale broken up by 30 Rock in the middle. While the only thing we know for sure is that they’re never doing paintball again, it seems certain the finale will include healthy amounts of Officer Chang, a doppleDeaner, the appearance of Evil Troy, Jeff and Abed, and possibly a return trip to the Dreamatorium.

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is confused and scared

Roughly two and a half weeks ago, at the behest of the Joystiq Qrew and my family, I ceased all consumption of soda-pop and fast-food. The change has been dramatic, to say the least, and while I feel less “full of goo” than I once did, I fear that I also may be changing into someone, or something, that I’m not comfortable with.

Earlier this week, for instance, I purchased blueberry-flavored Pop Tarts while grocery shopping, when I just as easily could have bought S’mores flavored. There wasn’t even anyone else with me, it was a decision I made of my own volition and what’s worse, I didn’t even realize it until much, much later. This is just one example of the many, increasingly frequent health-conscious decisions I’ve made as of late.

So, I just wanted to tell you guys that I love you, while I still can. I don’t know what is to become of me, but I want you to take these webcomics from last week, read them, vote for your favorites after the break, and enjoy. The old me would have wanted it that way.

The Harley Quinn’s Revenge DLC coming to Batman: Arkham City has been detailed, and it sounds like a departure from the game. Instead of an open-world affair, the DLC is story driven, initially placing you in Robin’s boots and tasking you with finding Batman, who’s been lost chasing Harley Quinn after the final events of the main game. The story time-shifts, explaining where Batman is and what he’s been up to by switching viewpoints a few times.

Robin still doesn’t have the chance to wander Arkham in full – he’ll only be able to explore this content and any previously released challenge maps. Harley Quinn is scheduled to get her revenge on May 29, for $9.99 on PSN, or 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live.

Wedbush thinks Grand Theft Auto 5 will launch in October

With this morning’s announcement that BioShock Infinite will now launch in February 2013, publisher Take-Two Interactive altered more than a game’s launch date. Take-Two is a publicly traded company, and one fewer gigantic product launch during the holiday season – arguably Take-Two’s only holiday product launch, unless you count fall launches of Borderlands 2 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown as “holiday” – means that shareholders will want to know what’s up. That worry is reflected in Take-Two’s stock price, which took a five percent hit since the market opened this morning.

But when Infinite got pushed out of the holiday season, it opened the slot up for another high-profile Take-Two-published title: Grand Theft Auto 5. “In our view, the delay opens the window for Grand Theft Auto V to be released in October 2012,” Michael Pachter of Webush Securities wrote in an email this morning, echoing a release window leak from earlier this year.

In his eyes, Infinite wasn’t just delayed to make it “something even more extraordinary,” as Ken Levine put it, but because the folks at Rockstar, “notified Take-Two that GTA V would be ready for October.” He believes this resulted in Take-Two offering Irrational Games an extra few months to prepare BioShock Infinite. His logic? “The studio [Rockstar Games] has scheduled every prior GTA release during that month (with GTA IV delayed to April 2008, due to bugs in the PS3 version).”

Furthermore, Pachter and co. speculate we could hear more about GTA 5’s launch date “as early as May 22″ during a scheduled quarterly investor call, or perhaps in a few more weeks at E3 2012. We’ve yet to hear back from Irrational, Rockstar, or Take-Two on the subject.
