Strategic Sharing: Zipcar Leads $13.7M Investment In Campus Car-Sharing Startup Wheelz
February 22, 2012 – 8:25 am | No Comment

Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Detroit-based Fontinalis…

Prepare wallets! DSi XL hits on March 28 for $190 Not everyone agrees that the DSi XL was a necessary step; after all, the original DS and DS Lite were the best selling game things on the market with their little screens and limited brightness. But when you hear about parents and grandparents enjoying a game of Picross or Professor Layton, you start to remember that yeah, there are other people in the world. And maybe they could use a device more suited to their needs. That’s kind of the other side of the the coin in ...
Japanese hardware sales, Feb. 1 – Feb. 7: Valentiney edition

Japanese hardware sales, Feb. 1 – Feb. 7: Valentiney edition Most of the younger interns here at the Japanese Hardware Sales Chart institute have had their wills systematically broken down, turning them into unfeeling, number-crunching machines. Still, we think it's important to give them one day a year -- Valentine's Day -- where they're allowed to experience that saccharine emotion known as love. Of course, we don't allow them to experience it first-hand -- that could lead to all kinds of scandalous behavior. No, we simply show them cutscenes from our favorite love ...

Japanese hardware sales, Jan. 11 – Jan. 18: Everyone loses edition Well, we guess that answers that, huh? No, but seriously folks -- though Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep is still selling fairly strong, the PSP lost half of its sales power since last week. In fact, every piece of gaming hardware went into a free fall between January 11 and January 18, leading us to once again wonder what the hell is going on over there. Did a really good book come out, or ...

HTC to sell 8 handsets through T-Mobile alone in 2010? Making 8 different handsets is no big feat — Hell, Samsung will probably launch 4 or 5 by the time I’m done typing this post — but getting 8 handsets onto one carrier in one year? Not too shabby. That’s what HTC will be doing in 2010 with T-Mobile, says one of Boy Genius’ boys. It’s important to note that not all of these handsets are necessarily new – we’re counting SKU by SKU here, some of which are already in the system. The myTouch 3G and ...
Next-Gen Nintendo DS Will Have Some Kind of Motion Detection [Nintendo DS]

Next-Gen Nintendo DS Will Have Some Kind of Motion Detection [Nintendo DS] Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata was more mouthy than most presidents are about their upcoming, but unannounced, products, and said that the upcoming DS will have an accelerometer. Or, some kind of motion sensor. Here's the quote: [It will have] highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing. The highly detailed graphics part is a given, but even so, is still pretty vague. It does mesh with the Nvidia Tegra rumors we ...
Shine On, You Crazy Gadgets [Gadgets]

Shine On, You Crazy Gadgets [Gadgets] I spent this decade hunting for the perfect gadget. I never thought I would end up with tech as good as this. But it's not the tech that interests me the most anymore. In 2000, I was just another kid out of college in Boston escaping to the Golden State's climate and opportunity. The perfect job didn't present itself for six long months; four months later, it burst with the bubble. It's not important what the job was. I was fired not just because ...

Our Favorite Apps: Stuff that stayed on our phones in 2009 As the year draws to a close, we thought we'd shine a spotlight on some of the favorite apps we used this year. These are the "sticky" apps, the ones that lingered on our iPhones after we gave them a preliminary spin. There's so much on the App Store, good, bad and indifferent; here are a few suggestions for items that deserve your attention. iAssociate [$1.99] Hugely challenging and long-term fun, this Funny-Farm-style game ...
