[Image via The Stub ] If you’ve been avidly following the Hollywood scuttlebutt this past week, you’ve probably heard of an event which is unfolding at this very moment: The 82nd Annual Academy Awards. We know how badly you guys want to be able to talk about the Oscars whilst chatting over your place of business’ water cooler, coffee pot or rodeo clown make-up station, so we’re here to help you understand the Awards ceremony in terms you’ll find easily understandable: The Oscars are the Spike TV Video Game Awards, but for movies. In short, this magical software concoction is a post-process effect that allows standard 2D games to be transformed into 3D masterpieces... and you don't even need to buy a 3D television. We were briefed on the tech ...
Hands-on: SOCOM 4 (with PlayStation Move!)
March 10, 2010 – 9:35 pm | No Comment
There are two questions I'll try to answer with this quick hands-on preview. Firstly, is SOCOM 4 the true sequel to the SOCOM franchise we've been waiting for? Secondly, does the PlayStation Move controller work as intended? It's hard to answer the first question, especially within the constraints of a ten-minute demo. What I can say is that even in this early state, SOCOM 4 looks very good, sporting incredibly detailed environments. While the early code has a noticeably choppy framerate, there was already a large ...

God of War 3 ‘right within budget’ — a $44 million budget Anger management simulator God of War III cost $44 million to create, according to director of production development John Hight, which is "right within budget." Speaking with Giant Bomb, Hight revealed that the team of 132 staff required to finish the third installment was more than double the crew (of about 60) on hand to wrap up God of War II, with the biggest growth occurring in the graphics and art departments. Considering the ultimate Kratos adventure will likely go ...

Gigabyte Codfish Here’s a new phone from Asian cell phone provider Gigabyte that may not be the GSmart Android, but could be just as interesting. This one is called the Codfish, and we don’t know much about it. According to the PointGPhone that we have in the photo, it is “very responsive” and “good manufacturing quality”. We do know that it does Android 1.6, has a 3.2 inch display, and a 5 megapixel camera. Well, I’m sure if the Codfish is really ...

Readers pick best webcomic: The Gods of Modernity

Readers pick best webcomic: The Gods of Modernity We never considered the possibility of an Xbox Live moderator being elevated to folk hero status -- the topic of last week's Wrapup winner, Penny Arcade's "The Gods of Modernity." Then again, we suppose it's not unthinkable. In our minds, the moderation of a massive gaming service is roughly equivalent with being a giant, ox-domesticating lumberjack. Thanks to everyone who voted, and congrats to Penny Arcade! Second and third place went to Brawl in ...

March 4, 2010 – 10:32 pm | No Comment
Team Fortress 2 re-imagined as a side-scroller Dylan Loney isn't just a dude with an awesome name, he's also quite the Team Fortress 2 mod-tician ... which is a real word that we totally didn't make up. With a couple of custom maps under his belt, Loney decided to up the ante, so he rolled up his sleeves and turned Valve's class-based shooter into a speedy side-scroller. The redesign was part of a contest for Interlopers back in December. Drawing ...

March 3, 2010 – 11:40 am | No Comment
EA: A ’small number’ of Boom Blox devs let go Electronic Arts claims a "small number of employees were impacted" by the publisher's decision to move Boom Blox development from EA Los Angeles to EA Bright Light Studio in Guildford, UK. Kotaku obtained a quote from the publisher, which notes that the move has nothing to do with the company's "restructuring" and is a routine event in a global studio organization to "leverage development strengths." The history ...
