Strategic Sharing: Zipcar Leads $13.7M Investment In Campus Car-Sharing Startup Wheelz
February 22, 2012 – 8:25 am | No Comment

Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Tale Of A Wolfram Research Co-founder And His Beloved “Periodic Table Table” [Video] Out of the annals of history comes this doozy. A man by the name of Theodore Gray is a co-founder of Wolfram Research , best known as the creator of Wolfram Alpha , the two-year-old computational answer engine, which Siri uses for 25 percent of her mobile searches . Along with Stephen Wolfram, Gray helped develop Mathematica , the computational software used in technical computing that makes Wolfram Alpha, among other things, tick. He is an author, polymath, and, it seems, an amateur Chemist — or should ...

Someone finally made soccer exciting; behold Ultimate Taser Ball To most Americans, soccer is just a bunch of people running up and down a field for 90 minutes, only to end in a 0-0 draw. We need a little more excitement, so someone decided to spice things up by giving each player a Taser, and encouraging them to use it.

Does lava flow in Yosemite National Park? Looking at these photos it seems as though a lava flow has suddenly erupted in one of America's most famous national parks — Yosemite. The problem is, though geologically active, it's not a park known to have a live lava flow, so what gives?

Purported Next-Gen iPad Display Caught And Examined; 2048×1536 Resolution Confirmed MacRumors has done something very bad – they went and got themselves an iPad 3 display module . Actually, it’s not so bad when you can apparently just order one online . Normally this part even being online and available ahead of launch would suggest it was a scam, but what matters isn’t the name of the part (could easily be a scam) but the part itself. They took a microscope to it, see — and it appears to have exactly four times the pixels of an ...

Kickstarter: A Bike Headlight To End All Bike Headlights Last year I locked up my bike over on Pike street for an evening out with my friends. When I came back a few hours later, both my headlight and taillight had been stolen. What a crackhead was going to do with my budget headlight I don’t know, but the real problem was that I had to ride home in the middle of the night with no lights. Brad Geswein and Slava Menn had a friend in a similar situation, except unlike me, he was actually hit ...
