Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Agony And Ecstasy Of Mike Daisey
March 17, 2012 – 11:29 pm | No Comment
The Agony And Ecstasy Of Mike Daisey It seems that noted firebrand Mike Daisey’s story – the one about the crippled, underaged factory workers who unspooled tales of woe and torture at the hands of their evil Foxconn masters at Apple’s behest- was at least partially fabricated . He was outed as, at best, a bad journalist and at worst, a fraud. To be clear, he’s a monologist and playwright and had no business telling this story (just as he really had no business telling Amazon’s story way back when ) but he, like ...

Rolls Royce’s ‘Phantom 102EX’ electric car will remain a phantom We're big fans of electric cars here at DVICE, so when Rolls Royce rolled out its electric luxury car concept — the Phantom 102EX — at the Geneva Motor Show last year, we all got super excited. Turns out the car's going to remain a concept forever. Rolls Royce ain't producing it.

Originally rumored to be making a return back in January, it's now been confirmed that the "Neo Geo X" portable gaming handheld is not the photoshopped concept of some bored fan. But to go old school, it'll cost ya.

Intel Capital Invests $21 Million In Swedish Eye-Tracking Tech Company Tobii Intel is betting big on the future of human interfaces with a $21 million (143 million kronor) investment in Tobii, a Swedish company that has been working for years on eye-tracking laptops and other devices. A 10% stake, it implies a valuation of around $200 million for the 12-year-old company. In 2007 Tobii raised $14M, then in 2009 another $26.8M, and the $21M from Intel Capital continues that trend of steady R&D funding. The news, announced by co-founder and VP John Elvesjö and reported by Computer Sweden ...

These Star Trek ties are color-coded for the jobs we all wish we had The ruminating geeks over at ThinkGeek are offering a subtle, professional way for a fan of Star Trek to strike their colors: officially licensed Star Trek ties. We're not talking ties with gaudy scenes from the various series. These are tasteful, carry only a small Starfleet badge on them and come in three different flavors.
Fly Or Die: The LG Spectrum

Fly Or Die: The LG Spectrum The Spectrum has been a busy little diva the last few days, strutting in and out of our NYC studio like she belongs there. So much in fact, that I’ve given her a gender and started to refer to her in gender-specific pronouns. A scary thought, to say the least. Matt seems less perturbed by her presence, though I was (and still am) more than willing to duke it out with him over the value of this here phone. Here’s the deal: The LG Spectrum has solid ...
Ion cannons can make solar panels for half the cost

Ion cannons can make solar panels for half the cost When I think of ion cannons, I think of disabled Imperial Star Destroyers. When the folks at startup Twin Creeks Technologies thinks of ion canons, they think of a way to make solar cells that are thin, flexible, efficient and super cheap. Massive futuristic weapons: what can't they do.

Nokia Lumia Windows 8 Tab Coming Later This Year? Nokia and Microsoft, sitting in a tree. K.I.S.S.i.n.g. First came WinPhone, then comes ARM tabs, then comes a baby in a baby carriage! If an unconfirmed Digitimes report is to be believed, Nokia is set to release a 10-inch Windows 8 tablet later this year. The report says the tab would hit the streets sometime in the fourth quarter, which would likely make it among the first batch of Windows 8 tablets. It’s reportedly built on a dual-core Qualcomm ARM chipset allowing Nokia to keep the price ...
NASA risks crashing spacecraft for close-up pics of Apollo sites

NASA risks crashing spacecraft for close-up pics of Apollo sites It still blows my mind that people (like this guy) have walked on the freakin' Moon, and I'm not the only one: NASA has sent its Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter dangerously low to snap some new pics of astronaut footprints on the surface of another little world.
Apple Goes Big In Texas With $304 Million Austin Campus
March 10, 2012 – 4:32 pm | No Comment
Apple Goes Big In Texas With $304 Million Austin Campus Most of the news around Austin this week is centered around SXSW , naturally, but Texas Governor (and erstwhile presidential candidate) Rick Perry broke some news today that’s unrelated, but still Austin-relevant. Apple, it seems, which has been slowly growing its presence in the state’s tech oasis, chose SXSW weekend as an auspicious time to announce a major new campus in Austin . There isn’t much known about the campus or its purpose, but Perry’s announcement does note that the price tag is a hefty $304 million, ...
