Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Detroit-based Fontinalis…

Samsung’s new ’smart cameras’ make sharing photos super simple If you're up to snuff on your Samsung history, you'll know that the Korean electronics giant is very keen on slapping the word "Smart" in front of all of its products. From Smart TVs to Smart Touch Remotes to Smart Home appliances including a smartphone-controllable washer and dryer, Samsung's got the connected goods. The only product that hasn't gone to school and come back enlightened is the camera. This year, Samsung's rolling out the smartness to all of ...

This Won’t End Well: Toyota Connects With Nintendo DS For In-Car Navigation Interface For some inexplicable reason, Nintendo and Toyota have teamed up to turn the Nintendo DS into a navigational remote control, thereby allowing drivers (although I hope passengers do most of the fiddling) to set their routes using their game consoles. The service, called Kuruma de DS lets you see map and destination info as well as tour information as you drive through town. The service slightly gamifies the experience by adding a POI saving option. The compatible Toyota Smart Navi system costs about $3,000 while the game ...

Makers Wanted: Are You A Hardware Start-Up? Talk To Us We’re about to launch a new video series called Makers here at TechCrunch and we’d love to hear from any and all hardware based startups. I want to hear about robots, toys, and railguns. I want to hear about new distilling methods, winemakers, and electric vehicles. I want to hear about anything that whirrs, chops, grates, goes, or crashes into a fireball. Over the next few months Jordan Crook, Josh Zelman, and I will try to cover every hardware startup we come across. If you think you’re ...

HTC Titan II Review: Sometimes A Win-Win Is A Lose

HTC Titan II Review: Sometimes A Win-Win Is A Lose Short Version I’ve been spending some quality time with HTC’s Titan II, and I would never call it a bad phone. But that’s not the question — good, bad, fast, slow, ugly, beautiful… they don’t matter unless I feel that I’d put down money and live my life with this device. And even though I expected this to be one of my favorites, I walk away from my review certain that I wouldn’t exchange cash for this handset. HTC is great at building quality hardware and Microsoft’s ...
LittleBigPlanet For The PS Vita To Enter Beta Soon

LittleBigPlanet For The PS Vita To Enter Beta Soon Three months after launching the PS Vita is still a hard sale. There simply isn’t a killer title yet. Uncharted: Golden Abyss is boring, the racing games fall flat, and the best game so far, Ninja Gaiden, is tepid at best. Worst yet, several of the Vita’s relatively strong titles are simply ports of smartphone games. In the age of $5 iPad games, spending $50 on a port is downright ludicrous. Sackboy and LittleBigPlanet might be the ace the the PS Vita so desperately need. And it’s ...
The Air Force’s secret 1970s plan to use 747s as aircraft carriers
May 8, 2012 – 9:43 am | No Comment
The Air Force’s secret 1970s plan to use 747s as aircraft carriers Flying aircraft carriers are staples science fiction and steampunk. It's an idea that sounds like it would be completely crazy in reality, but it's not crazy enough to keep the Air Force commissioning a report on the idea from Boeing back in 1973.

World’s largest underground high-speed rail station is dizzying The beauty about Hong Kong's modern landscape is that it's an architect's dreamland for vanguard design. Nearly all of the city's new structures sprouting up are very untraditional. Naturally, the world's largest underground high-speed rail station is also filled with character.
Elderly-Monitoring System BeClose Upgrades UI, Allows Caregivers To See The Big Picture
May 3, 2012 – 8:27 pm | No Comment
Elderly-Monitoring System BeClose Upgrades UI, Allows Caregivers To See The Big Picture BeClose is a small but interesting start-up in Tysons Corner, Virginia. They make home monitoring systems for the elderly, allowing them to stay at home even when they may be fragile or lack motility. The system consists of a number of motion sensors as well as a weight pad (to see when they’re sleeping) and a panic button that notifies the authorities and kin if there’s something wrong. The new update to the UI creates a dashboard experience for caregivers. They can see, at a glance, sleep ...
