Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Apple HDTV rumored to cost $1,499

Over the past few months we’ve heard a lot of rumors about Apple’s supposedly upcoming HDTV . While we’re not certain if such a device is on the way, close to completion or even nothing more than a myth, but Best Buy seems to have ideas of its own – according to a customer survey recently sent out from the company. In the survey, Best Buy basically asks customers about their thoughts on an “Apple HDTV”, trying to gauge their reception towards such a device. According to the survey, they have some sort of idea (or educated guesses) to what the Apple HDTV will be like: a 42″ TV that runs on iOS, support iCloud, remote controllable by an iOS device, have access to Netflix, YouTube and Flickr (basically Apple TV that’s been fused with a display), an “iSight” camera for hosting video conversations and will carry a premium price tag of $1,499. What do you think of

Japanese hardware sales, January 23 – 29: Crystal ball edition

By now, Super Bowl XLVI has finished and the victor has emerged victorious, their glimmering rings reflecting a light of shame into the hearts and souls of the defeated. This article was written much earlier in the day, however, so I’m going to use this as an opportunity to flex my fortune telling muscle and predict the outcome. You have my absolute word that this post will not be altered or edited in any way prior to it being posted. If I’m right, you owe me 50 bucks. If I’m wrong , and frankly when has that ever happened, I’ll record an acoustic cover version of any song the commenters decide on, and post it as next week’s hardware sales post. Ready? Based on the fact that Venus is in Pisces until February 8 and Mercury won’t be in retrograde for another 35 days, I’m going to call the NY Giants as tonight’s winners. 3DS: 84,789 [UP] 3,829 (4.72%) PS3: 22,924 [UP] 1,769 (8.36%) Vita: 18,942 [UP] 3,723

iBooks Author gets new EULA, aims to clear writer’s block

iBooks Author gets new EULA, aims to clear writer’s block

We’ve waxed lyrical about iBooks Author at the technological level, but a good self-publishing platform counts for nothing if authors are put off by its terms and conditions. A particular source of antagonism so far has been the notion that, if an author decides to charge a fee for their iBook, then Apple will claim exclusive distribution rights and prevent them from publishing their work anywhere else. Check out the More Coverage links below and you’ll see that a number of writers tore up Apple’s licensing agreement and flung it into the proverbial overflowing trash can. Now though, Cupertino has done some re-writing of its own and come up with a new EULA. It clarifies that Apple will only demand exclusive distribution rights over .ibooks files that are created with iBooks Author, rather than the book’s content itself. It states that “this restriction will not apply to the content of the work when distributed in [another] form.” So, there it is — writers everywhere can happily go back to tearing up their own work again.

Facebook Could Jumpstart HTML5 Platform With App Bookmarks On News Feed

Facebook’s late-comer HTML5 mobile app platform lags way behind the Apple App Store and Android Marketplace. Yesterday I spotted Facebook’s latest effort to catch up — a test showing bookmarks for third-party applications at the top of the mobile news feed. Currently, Facebook buries HTML5 app bookmarks at the bottom of its mobile site’s pull-out navigation menu, and only shows them in the iOS or Android Facebook app’s search bar. Placing them much more prominently atop the mobile home page could increase engagement — the first step in attracting developers to the platform and earning money on in-app purchases. The Facebook mobile app platform launched in October to help the social network start monetizing mobile through in-app payments on which it collects a 30% tax. Apps run through an internal web browser within its iOS and Android apps, allowing it to circumvent Apple and Google’s tax. However, the platform hasn’t gained serious traction with developers or users, and that’s a serious risk  the company noted in its S-1 filing to go…

Project Gemini through the eyes of the astronauts, part 2

This is the second half of our article on the Gemini Project, featuring some incredible newly-scanned images that the astronauts themselves took in orbit, straight from the original film. Previously, we looked at the first batch of manned missions, Gemini III through VII , and now we’ve got the stories of Gemini VIII through XII, featuring the debut of Neil Armstrong, an emergency in space and one very angry alligator.

Ubisoft to take mobile gaming seriously?

If domain name registrations are to be an indication of a company’s future direction, it looks like Ubisoft is about to look at mobile gaming seriously. The company recently registered two domain names related to mobile – Ubisoftmobile.com and Ubisoft-mobile.com. At the moment both URLs lead to parked websites and nothing related to Ubisoft, so we can’t say for sure. But if Ubisoft didn’t purchase the domain names just to prevent any future cyber-squatting, it looks like the game publisher/developer could be focusing its efforts on creating mobile games in the future. Maybe through a new division called Ubisoft Mobile in the future? What do you think? By Ubergizmo . Related articles : Assassin’s Creed 3 to take place during the America Revolution?
