Strategic Sharing: Zipcar Leads $13.7M Investment In Campus Car-Sharing Startup Wheelz

Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Detroit-based Fontinalis…

Hanako 2 upgraded to new and improved model

When it comes to dealing with robots, they do help out in the medical industry as budding doctors learn the tricks of their trade by “operating” on such robots – so it makes perfect sense to make it as realistic as possible. Hanako 2 is a Japanese dental patient simulator that allows dentists to practice “real-life” procedures on her before they start drilling actual human patients’ teeth. What does Hanako 2 bring to the table? Well, “she” is able to sneeze, roll with her eyes and blink, open and close her mouth, cough and even simulate a gag reflex – making her look and function all the more realistic. Hanako 2 is also said to come with better speech recognition than before, letting her discuss her condition (without any bad breath, we bet) with the dentist. Since the manufacturer of Hanako 2 also churns out “love dolls”, they are able to change Hanako’s skin from PVC to silicone, while forming the tongue and cheek linings in one piece. To see Hanako 2 in action, you can check out the video right after the jump. Hanako 2 upgraded to new and improved …

Yamaha’s TNR-i app lights up iOS with its musical stylings, dashing looks

We’ve seemingly unearthed a whole lot of alternatronica in the past few days (not that it’s a bad thing), so you’ll understand when we enter yet another combatant into this abstract ring. Looking more like a complex game of Simon and almost playing like it too, Yamaha’s TNR-i app apes the functionality of the Tenori-on for your iOS instrument of choice. Ringing in at a hefty

Deadly Premonition director wants to make a new game, just can’t afford it

Swery65, the director of last year’s Deadly Premonition , has taken to the Internet in a new blog posting asking for support for a brand new title. He says that his team at Access Games is itching to start a new project , but game design takes more than just dreams and ideas — apparently it takes time and money as well. And since time is money, he basically just needs money. “I want to make a new game,” he wrote. “As much as I want, but that alone is not enough to start the process. Would anyone be ready to invest in us?” Swery doesn’t say anything about what kind of game he plans to make, but does promise that he’ll “work until it kills me,” and that the team will definitely “make something good.” Any big-time investors out there willing to call his bluff? It seems like, despite the mixed reception for Deadly Premonition around the world, Swery shouldn’t have too much trouble finding a
