Strategic Sharing: Zipcar Leads $13.7M Investment In Campus Car-Sharing Startup Wheelz
February 22, 2012 – 8:25 am | No Comment

Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Detroit-based Fontinalis…

Amazon inflates its streaming library

Attempting to catch up with Hulu Plus’ and Netflix’s streaming services, Amazon Prime Instant Video, a video streaming service, boasts that it has “more than 17,000 movies and television shows.” This is technically true, but the everyday consumer might see it a little differently.

Nokia Lumia 900 Review: This One’s A No-Brainer

Short Version Guys, this one’s such a no brainer that I shouldn’t even have to lay it all out. But I will. The Nokia Lumia 900 is an excellent handset, comes packed with a fresh new operating system in the form of Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, and thanks to a nifty AT&T bill credit from Nokia , you can essentially get this $100 LTE-equipped phone for free until the 21st. Repeat: for free . Like I said, this one’s a no brainer. Features: 4.3-inch 480

Alexandre Herchovitch dresses up HP Pavilion dm1 with golden doilies, higher sticker price

Ask the most fashionable folks you know, looking good isn’t cheap — no surprise then, that playing dress up has put a premium on the HP Pavilion dm1’s price tag. Brazilian designer Alexandre Herchovitch has dolled up the ultraportable laptop with a lacy gold topcoat, applying the signature flair to the machine’s keyboard, palm rest and lid. The cost of style? About $1800, according to Notebook Italia , which buys you 4GB DDR3 SDRAM, a 500GB hard drive and 1.65GHz dual-core AMD E-450 brain. A pretty penny, considering the notebook’s Core i3 model can be had for a mere $600. Sure, Herchovitch takes the dm1 out of our holiday gift guide’s “on the cheap” section, but where else are you going to get a designer doily kicks?

HTC Golf press image leaked

Sometime last month, there were whispers of a new smartphone from HTC known as the HTC Golf , which surprisingly enough will not be part of the flagship range, but rather, has every intention of making a splash on the entry level to mid-range market. We do know that it will run on the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, and the folks over at PocketNow managed to snag what they deem to be the first press image of the HTC Golf. Heck, there are even whispers going around that the HTC Golf might be renamed as the Wildfire C eventually. Despite that, it will still resemble the latest One series in terms of design, sporting a white frame which will most probably hold a single core processor that is no faster than 1GHz, 512MB RAM, and 4GB of internal memory. Shadowrun Returns says let’s get physical, physical

The Shadowrun Returns Kickstarter passed the $1 million mark, meaning all $15 backers will receive the Linux port of the final game — but that’s not all . Harebrained Schemes added a new $125 donor level that rewards backers with the Deluxe Boxed Edition. This includes a “game disc, soundtrack disc, a mini-poster, and — check this — a Shadowrun Returns USB Dog Tag set, containing DRM-free versions of the game (PC/Mac/Linux) and soundtrack (and maybe one or two other surprises, too),” Harebrained writes. There are two days left in the Shadowrun Returns Kickstarter, so if you enjoy dog tags, get on that thing now .

How The Pebble Smart Watch Hit $2 Million On Kickstarter [Q&A]

The Pebble smart watch – a clever little device that connects to your iPhone or Android device and, oddly enough, tells the time – was a twinkle in the eye of founder Eric Migicovsky just a few weeks ago. Now the product has reached $2 million in funding. And if that weren’t enough, InPulse , the company that makes the Pebble, only ever asked for $100,000 over the course of the entire project. It’s not only a testament to the watch itself, which from what I’ve seen is pretty damn cool, but a testament to the power of Kickstarter and crowd-funding in general. We decided to have a little chat with Mr. Migicovsky to figure out how this incredible success story came to be. Here’s what we learned: TechCrunch: Tell us about the team. Who are you guys and how did you come together on this? Eric Migicovsky: The core of the team is from the University of Waterloo. I studied system design engineering there. The Pebble is one of those classic four-year…
