Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Portabliss: Sprinkle (iOS/Android)

Portabliss: Sprinkle (iOS/Android)

Did you know that you can download handheld games now? That’s amazingly convenient! The only inconvenient part of it is finding the right games to buy — and that’s where we come in, with our Portabliss column. In each installment, we’ll tell you about a downloadable game on the iPhone, iPad, Android device, DSi, 3DS, PSP, etc. Today: Jetpack Joyride . I admit, I feel pretty ghoulish about playing an iPhone game in which you put out fires, while wildfires pretty much surround me. But if I look at it as, perhaps, a cathartic experience, or just try not to think about the morbid coincidence, Sprinkle’s pretty fun. It’s an easy game to comprehend: you have a whimsical-looking fire truck, and you spray water all over the screen to put out fires and save cute, obviously concerned little characters. You have to use your limited water supply efficiently, and spray water through narrow holes, bounce it off of walls, and even use it to move obstacles in order to get all the fires doused. It differs from a lot of these types of puzzle …

Toast clock is inedible

We’ve covered a fair share of weird gadgets here on Ubergizmo, and here’s one of the more interesting ones we’ve seen recently – a clock looks just like a slice of toasted bread. Hailing all the way from Japan, this interesting wall decoration makes for a great conversation starter in addition to being a functional time keeper. On the face of the clock we have numbers that look like they were created with jam, while the clock hands work and look like regular clock hands. The toast clock comes in two sizes – with two designs for the regular sized toast and one design for the “mega-sized” version. Suitable as a wall clock or a table clock, the toast clocks are available for purchase online now, though you’ll probably need to get someone in Japan to send it over to you. This is one toast you don’t want to spread butter on, despite how authentic looking it is. Find out more . Toast clock is inedible , By Ubergizmo . AT&T’s Response To Sprint’s Lawsuit: Bring It On

AT&T’s Response To Sprint’s Lawsuit: Bring It On

And the fun just goes on, and on, and on . Following this morning’s news that Sprint is suing AT&T/T-Mobile in an attempt to block their proposed merger, AT&T has just returned with a response. As you might expect, it pretty much boils down to “Yeah, yeah, see you in court. Oh, and here are some reasons we’re awesome.” The full text of the response: This simply demonstrates what we’ve said all along – Sprint is more interested in protecting itself than it is in promoting competition that benefits consumers. We of course will vigorously contest this matter in court as AT&T’s merger with T-Mobile USA will: help solve our nation’s spectrum exhaust situation and improve wireless service for millions; allow AT&T to expand 4G LTE mobile broadband to another 55 million Americans, or 97% of the population; and result in billions of additional investment and tens of thousands of jobs, at a time when our nation needs them…

Android TouchPad Project Finally Gets Working Touch Screens

Regardless of your thoughts on what OS should be used on HP’s TouchPad , work on getting a fully-featured version of Android up and running continues unabated. There’s been a lot of progress in the past few weeks, but a group of devs revealed today that one crucial piece of the puzzle has just been popped into place: the touch screen finally works! In addition to getting a TouchPad going on Android 2.3.5, a video released by Team TouchDroid earlier today shows that their new multitouch drivers seem to work without a hitch. The TouchPad can detect up to ten input points simultaneously, which is utter overkill for most applications, but it’s heartening to see nonetheless. With this, HP’s FrankenPad is one step closer to being a reality. It’s not clear whether or not Team TouchDroid’s experimental TouchPad has anything else going for it, like working WiFi or audio, but it’s certainly within the realm of possibility. These are, after all, the guys who managed to get a…

Scientists develop the world’s smallest single-molecule electric motor

Scientists develop the world’s smallest single-molecule electric motor

Bigger is certainly not better when it comes to the world’s first single-molecule electric engine, which measures in at one nanometer wide — for perspective, that lash hanging from your left eye is around 60,000 times larger. Single-molecule engines have been used for years, but the new method uses a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope to power and control the molecule more effectively. In the future, scientists could use the technology for things like lab-on-a-chip devices , miniature medical testing equipment that require a motor to push fluid through tiny pipes. Tufts researchers responsible for the discovery warn that a practical application is still a ways off, but are hopeful that they’ll snag a Guinness world record , regardless. After hearing the news, both Pinky and The Brain are feeling entirely more confident about their lifelong goals.
