Interview: Ngmoco’s We Rule after a year on the App Store

Ngmoco's We Rule has arguably changed the App Store since its release. Before We Rule, the App Store was generally based on a rather traditional gaming model -- developers released games for a price, and customers paid or didn't pay based on that price. But with We Rule, Ngmoco (as outlined by CEO Neil Young at last year's GDC) showed that freemium could really work on the App Store, and the ensuing shift led us away from more ...
Swappa: It’s Like Craigslist, But For Android Geeks

Buying a used Android phone can be tough. It seems like most of the people slingin’ their handsets up on eBay or Craigslist are doing so because they don’t really understand the phone, which doesn’t exactly lend to their ability to aptly describe it. Most of’em end up reading something like: FOR SALE: The Verizon ANDROID. It has a touchscreen, buttons, microphone, four “G”s, buttons, and a battery. Runs all the apps! iPhone sucks! Brand new in box. Well, the box is new. The phone is broken. ...
Speed Test: HTC Thunderbolt vs. iPhone 4
Third-party wireless retailer Wirefly (who has been all about the HTC Thunderbolt for the past few days) has just shared the video up above, which seeks to answer question that’s on just about every geek’s mind (or, at least, that I’m going to say is on every geek’s mind for the sake of this post): just how much faster is the data speed of the 4G-powered HTC Thunderbolt compared to the 3G-powered Verizon iPhone ? Turns out (in this test at least), it’s about twice as fast on the ...
AT&T forcing illegal data tetherers to sign up for official tether plan

The always douchey AT&T is making headlines again. And once again it's related to the iPhone. The wireless operator is discretely cracking down on iPhone users who are tethering their data plan to other devices using jailbroken solutions. Unauthorized tethering allows other devices to piggyback off the iPhone's data plan to skip out on having to pay an extra fee.
Does iPhone 4 Personal Hotspot add GPS to Wi-Fi-only iPads?

There's a bit of a discussion floating around these days regarding the ability of the iPhone 4 Personal Hotspot to add GPS geolocation data to a Wi-Fi only iPad. This got started with an Urbanape post by blogger Zachary Bir in which he described being able to put his iPhone 4 in Personal Hotspot mode, make a connection to the phone with his original Wi-Fi iPad, and then watch on Google Maps on the iPad as the "blue dot" followed his ...
iPhone-Controlled Kitchen Island Slides Up With A Slickness

This is really cool. I’m sure those of us with stationary kitchen islands wish we could scoot it out of the way now and then, but even then, where would we put it? This guy, using an iPhone app I don’t recognize, is controlling a lift in a utility room downstairs that lifts that kitchen island right up. He appears to have some Flor units covering it up, but I bet you could rig up a system that doesn’t… you know, fall away like that. The best ...
GM extends OnStar smartphone control to 14 more vehicles

Once solely slated for the Chevy Volt, the OnStar MyLink smartphone app has gained considerable ground -- last July, GM expanded the iPhone and Android remote domination over your horn, door locks, and real-time data to every 2011 automobile, and now it's reaching back through time to activate fourteen vehicles from 2010. As you'd expect, that's mostly a smattering of SUVs and crossovers like the Cadillac Escalade, Buick Enclave, GMC ...
The Daily set to launch in the UK, US edition only

According to The Guardian newspaper, Rupert Murdoch's The Daily will be available in the UK within the first half of this year, but first Apple must introduce its new subscription-based pricing system in the UK.
Jon Miller, the chief digital officer of Murdoch's News Corporation, said that it would be "not too long from now" until the news app arrives in western Europe. It's understood, however, that this will simply be the US edition made available outside of the ...
iPod touch owners report graphics issues under iOS 4.3

Reports are coming in of iPod touch users having graphics glitches after updating to iOS 4.3. As you can see in the picture here and in this video, the problem looks like overlapping icons and "interference" on the screen.
There's a growing thread on the Apple message boards of fourth-generation iPod touch users who aren't happy. Resets and factory restores don't solve the problem, it seems, and users are looking to Apple to fix the problem with an ...
Bon Jovi says Steve Jobs killed music business

Is Steve Jobs music's savior or angel of death? Jon Bon Jovi cast his vote in The Sunday Times Magazine: the American rock musician thinks Jobs is "killing" the music industry with iTunes.
The massive success of iTunes, says Bon Jovi, has caused the "magical" experience of buying records in a store to disappear. "Kids today have missed the whole experience of putting the headphones on, turning it up ...
