Strategic Sharing: Zipcar Leads $13.7M Investment In Campus Car-Sharing Startup Wheelz
February 22, 2012 – 8:25 am | No Comment

Well, you have to hand it to the strategy team over at Zipcar . Arguably the largest on-demand car-sharing network, Zipcar went public last year and not long after saw its market cap cross $1 billion . It’s since fallen back, and with collaborative consumption and the market for car-sharing heating up, the big players have to make moves. Zipcar has since forged a partnership with Ford, making it the largest provider of cars for Zipcar’s University program , and, in December, the company took a controlling stake in Spain’s largest car-sharing network, Avancar . Today finds Zipcar making another strategic move to get its mitts in fellow car-sharing companies, again with a focus on universities, whose students are among the most eager adopters of car-sharing models. What do I mean? The company today announced that it is a lead investor in the $13.7 million series A financing of Wheelz , a junior, university-focused version of itself. The Detroit-based Fontinalis…

The Engrain Keyboard Is An Apple Keyboard Turned Art
April 22, 2011 – 9:50 am | No Comment
The Engrain Keyboard Is An Apple Keyboard Turned Art I totally enjoy the overall theme of the Engrain Tactile Keyboard but love the textured keys made by just sandblasting a board, which removes the softer wood in between the grain. The keys are then cut, branded and glued to an Apple keyboard. But unfortunately this is just a one-off concept and will likely not be sold retail. You could make your own, though. I might. (but probably not) [ Coroflot via Wired ] Read more ...
YTLive web app lets you watch YouTube Live broadcasts on your iOS device
April 22, 2011 – 9:50 am | No Comment
YTLive web app lets you watch YouTube Live broadcasts on your iOS device YouTube entered the live video streaming market with the launch of its YouTube Live service earlier this month. The high-profile video site is competing against similar live stream services such as Ustream and Justin.tv. Unlike its competitors, YouTube Live uses only Flash technology to deliver its live stream. As a result, iOS owners are unable to watch these live feeds on their mobile devices. Coming to the rescue is a web app, YTLive, which lets you copy the URL ...

Apple planning May event to celebrate its 10-year retail anniversary Get your glad rags out, because it looks like Apple's preparing to celebrate the 10th birthday of its first retail stores at the end of next month. Employees have been told they can't request any vacation time in late May, possibly because Apple's planning some sort of event to mark the anniversary. The first Apple Retail Stores launched on May 19, 2001 in McLean, Virginia's Tyson's Corner Mall and at the Galleria in Glendale, California. The Tyson's Corner store has even ...
Review: T-Mobile G2x (Optimus 2X)

Review: T-Mobile G2x (Optimus 2X) Short version: Perhaps the most powerful phone on the market, the G2x is certainly impressive technically, but physically it’s uninspiring, and a lack of compelling HD and gaming content compatible with Android makes its greatest assets (large screen and powerful processor) underwhelming. And where’s my Gingerbread? Features: Dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 processor and 512MB of RAM 4″ 800
iPad 2 Shipping Estimate Drops To 1-2 Weeks

iPad 2 Shipping Estimate Drops To 1-2 Weeks The iPad 2 is still a hard Furby to find. It’s still sold out mostly everywhere but at least the estimated wait time is dropping to 1-2 weeks on Apple.com. The shipping window jumped to 4-5 weeks shortly after the iPad 2 first went on sale. Well, it’s been a few weeks since then and the estimate dropped as promised even though the Japanese quake reportedly caused part supply issues. It’s just not the US that’s blessed with a shorter wait. AppleInsider reports that other countries including ...
In the Apple/Samsung lawsuit, the picture doesn’t tell the story

In the Apple/Samsung lawsuit, the picture doesn’t tell the story There are some Android cheerleaders out there passing around the error-ridden image above, minus the big red stamp, of course. The Android advocates' assertions are that Apple is accusing Samsung of ripping off the iPhone (which was first shown in January 2007) when in actuality the iPhone looks remarkably similar to the Samsung F700, which was announced at CEBIT in 2006. Oh, smack! Right? Wrong. While the F700 was indeed announced at CEBIT in 2006, the actual phone wasn't shown until February ...

Official White House Android app attempts to quash OS inequality They may not be able to please all of the people all of the time, but President Obama and gang are doing their best to reach across the OS aisle with a new Android app. Like the iPhone edition that came before it, this official White House app offers presidential photos and video, updates from the blog and briefing room, and alerts about events and announcements. Unfortunately, all of the people won't be pleased ...
Microsoft Releases Photosynth For iOS
April 19, 2011 – 7:41 am | No Comment
Microsoft Releases Photosynth For iOS Microsoft’s Photosynth app for iOS is one of the few apps I will use on a regular basis. It’s essentially a photo-stitcher for iPhone that can create some pretty amazing panoramic photos. All you have to do is slowly move an iPhone, as directed on-screen, in a circular fashion around a scene you wish to capture. After briefly processing the series of photos, Photosynth will allow you to share the photo either on Facebook, Bing Maps, or on Photosynth’s site. It’s not perfect, but then again, it’s ...
Pimp Your Screen lets you customize your iOS device without jailbreaking
April 19, 2011 – 7:41 am | No Comment
Pimp Your Screen lets you customize your iOS device without jailbreaking One of the most unique apps to be made available on the App Store has got to be Pimp Your Screen by Apalon. The ability to completely customize your iOS device’s appearance has been a feature that’s sorely lacking in Apple’s products. Because of this rigidness, people have been resorting to jailbreaking their devices in order to change how they look. Apalon’s app, Pimp Your Screen, is here to help people with the task albeit without the ...
Portal 2 out now

Portal 2 out now Thanks to the hard work of the folks who purchased Valve's Potato Sack promotion, the Portal 2 alternate reality game has finished, and the long-awaited sequel is now available on Steam. The game officially releases tomorrow for consoles and PC, but since the Steam version is compatible with SteamPlay, it's also available for the Mac from day one. Portal was one of the best games of the past few years, and every indication is that the sequel will be ...
