Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

HP at Macworld Expo 2011: ePrint and environmental stewardship HP creates more products that work with Macs and iOS devices than any other electronics manufacturer on the planet. That's why TUAW always seeks out the former employer of Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak for on-the-floor video. This morning I had the opportunity to speak with several HP employees who are manning the booth at Macworld Expo, to hear what the company is doing for the benefit of Apple fans. The new ePrint technology developed by HP uses Bonjour ...

January 25, 2011 – 2:34 am | No Comment
With a title like "Director of Global Security" and a background in Naval information warfare and network vulnerability analysis, it seems like new Apple employee David Rice would be helping to guard secrets. But that might not be the case. More than anything else, All Things D is guessing that Rice is coming to 1 Infinite Loop to help shore up enterprise security on the iOS platform. Working not only for the Department of Defense, but also ...
Meet The Satarii Star, The Crowdfunded iPhone Accessory Of Every Blogger’s Dreams

Meet The Satarii Star, The Crowdfunded iPhone Accessory Of Every Blogger’s Dreams I’m really starting to love this whole crowdfunding thing. Even if you look beyond gargantuan success stories like the TikTok Nano watch , you’ve still got all sorts of all sorts of wonderful concepts like the PadPivot , the mBrace , and the C-Loop all taking huge steps toward production thanks to ultra-early-adopters who were willing to pledge their cash up front. Last week, I had the chance to sit down and chat with a new company called Satarii, which is a pretty small operation (just a ...

Apple patent suggests multi-touch keyboards might be in the future A new Apple patent uncovered by Macrumors showcases the work of FingerWorks, which Apple purchased in 2005. FingerWorks, best known now for being the base of today's gesture-recognition technology, produced the TouchStream multi-touch keyboard early last decade. However, as demonstrated in certain products such as the Magic Cube, lack of tactile feedback along with the need to look at the keys while typing lest your fingers begin drifting are among the problems with getting ...

$10,000 winning call from Apple hung up by lady You know how skeptical the world is when a lady actually hung up when an Apple rep called her to tell her that she was the winner of a $10,000 gift card simply by virtue of her downloading the 10 billionth app from the App Store. Gail Davis, a woman who resides in Orpington, England, actually answered “Thank you very much; I’m not interested”. Later on, Davis was informed by her daughters, where one of ...
USA Today updates and improves iPad app

USA Today updates and improves iPad app There are plenty of news apps for the iPad, but I'm happy to see USA Today aggressively improving what was already a useful and easy to use app. Version 2.0 is still free, and has added more extensive tech coverage. Tech reviews feature iPad apps, and there is a video player, along with a spiffy This Week in Space section. The app also has increased travel coverage, along with a map that displays airport delays. The app now multitasks in ...

UFC Files Lawsuit Againt Justin.tv As It Tries To Elmininate Illegal Online Streams Altogether UFC has continued its fight against copyright infringement by filing a lawsuit against Justin.tv , the video streaming Web site where, UFC alleges, people can watch its events for free. UFC takes issue with “Justin.tv’s repeated and ongoing failure to meaningfully address the rampant and illegal uploading of video of live Pay-Per-View UFC events by members and users of the Justin.tv website.” UFC had previously subpoenaed Justin.tv (and Ustream) for the names of people who had streamed events illegally. Everyone is in a tough spot here. Clearly ...
