Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Analyst Says Nokia’s MeeGo is "the Biggest Joke In the Tech Industry Right Now" [Nokia] Normally we don't care much for analyst-talk, but in the case of Adnaan Ahmad's disparaging open letter to Nokia it's worth taking a look—if only for the advice he dishes out about adopting Windows Phone 7. The Berenberg Bank analyst Adnaan Ahmad recommends Nokia should strike up an exclusive deal with ...
Steve Sande: A first look at The Daily

Steve Sande: A first look at The Daily I haven't read a newspaper since the Rocky Mountain News went belly-up a few years ago, and I'm not a fan of broadcast or cable news at all. So Rupert Murdoch (at right, during this morning's press conference) and his minions at News Corp have a long way to go to impress someone who pretty much gets all of his news from RSS feeds, occasional peeks at news websites, and Twitter. I downloaded The Daily for free a ...

Macworld Expo 2011: PhatWare and TUAW chat about apps, handwriting recognition Nestled in the cozy confines of the Mobile Apps Showcase at Macworld Expo 2011 was one of my personal favorite iOS developers – PhatWare. This company has taken note-taking on the iPad and iPhone to a new level with three products: PhatPad, WritePad and PhatNotes. I had the opportunity to speak with PhatWare CEO Stan Miasnikov at the PhatWare kiosk and catch up on the latest updates with PhatPad. What's ...
Microsoft Office coming to the Apple store?

Microsoft Office coming to the Apple store? Remember how we discussed how OneNote App is available for free on the iPhone for a limited time? It would appear that Microsoft wants to get its Office on iOS. According to Amanda Lefebvre of Microsoft, the company is looking into the Mac App Store for distribution of Office for Mac. Office for Mac is currently available on disc and online, complete with a 30-day trial. Of course those sales don’t involve Apple getting a 30-percent cut of ...
My favorite 3 iPhone apps: T-Pain
January 30, 2011 – 6:45 am | No Comment
We're starting a new series at TUAW called "My favorite 3 iPhone apps" -- and to kick it off, we're starting with rapper T-Pain. We caught up with the AutoTune master himself at CES promoting the I Am T-pain microphone, based on the popular iPhone app. He let us know his favorite three iPhone apps; one of them is the Delta app, because the man is a true jetsetter (and has a crazy travel schedule). Look for more ...
iPhone 4 vs LG Optimus 2X: Video Recording Quality Comparison
January 29, 2011 – 8:55 pm | No Comment
iPhone 4 vs LG Optimus 2X: Video Recording Quality Comparison Yesterday afternoon, an LG Optimus 2X finished the last leg of its rigorous journey from a South Korean factory to my front porch in California. As the first Android smartphone (and the first smartphone of any platform, really) to make it into the wild with a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, it is — for the time being at least — the most powerful Android phone in the world. We’ll have our full review up in just a few days, but in the mean time I figured you ...
Verizon iPhone Release Gets Dated Down To The Hour

Verizon iPhone Release Gets Dated Down To The Hour Nothing much to see here folks. Just a bunch of people foaming at the mouth over, to them, the most anticipated phone (ever) moving to a similar, but different network, their network . With tensions so tight, someone had to let people know down to the hour just when they should keep hitting their browser’s refresh button. Continue reading… Read more crunchgear
13 reasons why software is not free
January 29, 2011 – 2:44 am | No Comment
13 reasons why software is not free When Steve Jobs announced the App Store, he made it clear that Apple would be happy to take on the costs of hosting and distributing free apps. I remember thinking at the time that he actually seemed to be pushing the idea of free apps. Free apps helped launch the iOS App Store into having stratospheric numbers of available apps, and probably pushed down the overall price of many other apps as well. But there's no such thing as a free lunch, ...
