Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Well you better be, because the developer has just announced on its blog that the game has gone gold – one week ahead of its official release date. In case you didn’t know, going gold means that the game has been approved in its final build and is ready to be shipped out in its current state (not 500,000 CD sales). Apple Promises iOS 5 Update In A Few Weeks To Suck Less Battery Life For the past couple of weeks, I’ve heard the same thing over and over again. “The iPhone 4S is awesome, but…” And it’s a big “but”. The battery life. It sucks . Well, to be clear, it sucks for some users, but not all. For example, I’m not noticing anything out of the ordinary on my device. It’s essentially the same battery life I got with the iPhone 4 running iOS 4, as far as I can tell. But today Apple has acknowledged that some bugs are ...

Google, Why Don’t You Hang On To That Gmail App For A While? By now you’re probably well aware that Google released their long-awaited Gmail iOS app today, only to unceremoniously yank it from the App Store when people pointed out that it didn’t really work . Google offered a mea culpa by stating that they have removed the app while they correct the problem, and that they’re working on a new version to be released soon. Here’s a thought: just keep it. At least for a little while. I’m sure this must sound a bit petty, but people have ...

Gorgeous retro posters of our solar system’s planets This series of spectacular planetary posters is the work of artist Stephen Di Donato. They're styled after artwork from the 1960s, and include all eight planets but no icy dwarfs (I'm looking at you, Pluto). The "Beyond Earth" series was funded (way over-funded, in fact) on Kickstarter, but luckily for you, you can still buy digital copies of all of these images in formats ranging from iPhone all the way up to monstrous desktop (2650x1440). You get 88 ...

Kinectimals back on the Windows Marketplace Back in August we wrote about Kinectimals, Microsoft’s upcoming game that would bridge the Xbox 360 and Windows Phone devices. Well, the game happened to be prematurely released last week for some reason as it was quickly pulled off the Windows Marketplace. But now it’s been reported that the game is back on the Marketplace – this time for good. In Kinectimals, users get to choose one of five kitties or import an existing cat from ...

GarageBand Arrives On The iPhone And iPod Touch GarageBand , Apple’s music creation app, is now available on the smaller screens of the iPhone and iPod Touch, after its introduction on the iPad earlier this year . Like the iPad version, the new app has Touch instruments like keyboards, pianos, organs, drums, guitars and basses.
