Command & Conquer coded in HTML5

Remember the classic RTS known as Command & Conquer? Well, an enterprising coder, Aditya Ravi Shankar, actually recreated the strategy game using nothing but HTML5, where it runs on 69k of Javascript. Why did he set out on such an adventure? For starters, Shankar’s attempt was a self-mandated undertaking in order to improve his coding skills, where he gave himself a one month window to rebuild the game in the browser, and had to comb through the original game’s files in order to obtain all the right sprites, sounds and specs. According to Shankar, “In hindsight, I might have wanted to take smaller steps and make a tower defense game instead of jumping directly into an RTS. Trying to do the whole thing in under a month all by myself wasn’t the smartest idea.” As part of Shankar’s recreation of Command & Conquer, it included buildings, terrain, combat, tiberium harvesting and regrowth, in addition to the ability to sell and repair buildings. You want fog of war? It has that, too, in addition to a pannable map, different cursors, …

Watch Me Talk To My iPhone 4S (Siri Demo)
October 16, 2011 – 11:40 am | No Comment
Watch Me Talk To My iPhone 4S (Siri Demo) If the iPhone 4S has one standout feature, it is the Siri personal assistant . You ask Siri to do things by speaking to it, and it can call anyone in your contact list, send them a text message or email, set up a meeting, play a song, set up a reminder for yourself, get directions, or just ask a question. It is a conversation starter in more ways than one. Siri is the kind of feature that makes you want to whip out your phone to ...
iPhone 4S review
October 14, 2011 – 2:49 pm | No Comment
iPhone 4S review This isn't the iPhone 5. No matter how badly you wanted something slim, sleek and wedge-shaped, this isn't it. If you went ahead and got your hopes up ahead of Apple's "Let's Talk iPhone" event, hopefully you've gotten over the pangs of discontent by now, because this device pictured front and center is the iPhone 4S. It's a new spin on an old phone that will shock none, but give it half a chance, and it will still impress. The ...

Steve Wozniak On How The iPhone 4S Will Change His Life (TCTV) Steve Wozniak likes to be the first person in line to buy the latest Apple products. This evening, the Apple co-founder and designer of the Apple I and II, was #1 on line outside the Apple store in Los Gatos, California to get the iPhone 4S . He tweeted about it and he’ll be staying up all night. TechCrunch TV caught up with Woz and asked him why he does it. He explains what feature the new phone has that will change his life. Woz also tells ...

TCTV: Is The iPhone 4S A Worthwhile Upgrade? iPhoned out yet? Of course you’re not. (Don’t worry Android fans — your day is coming soon .) TechCrunch Editor Erick Schonfeld and I sat down for a few minutes today to riff on all things iPhone 4S, from the merits of the device itself to whether or not the tech community at large is being a bit too harsh. Plus, the question of the hour: who should buy it? Crunchbase APPLE Company: Apple Website: apple.com Launch Date: January 4, 1976 IPO: October 5, 1980, NASDAQ:AAPL Started ...
Siri: My “Humble” Female Personal Secretary
October 4, 2011 – 3:24 pm | No Comment
Siri: My “Humble” Female Personal Secretary Today, Apple introduced us to the iPhone 4S . It’s hard not to feel let down after the iPhone 5 rumor mill was spinning at full force just yesterday ( courtesy of the craziest rumor yet ), but a couple 4S features were enough to perk up my spirit. One feature in particular, Siri , pretty much blew my mind. It is, far and away, the coolest voice control system I’ve ever heard of, and seems to do just about everything. Ask Siri for nearby Greek restaurants? ...
If A Motorola Android Tab Leaks And It’s Just Like The Rest, Does It Really Matter?
September 25, 2011 – 2:13 pm | No Comment
If A Motorola Android Tab Leaks And It’s Just Like The Rest, Does It Really Matter? So apparently there’s a new Xoom in the works. Big surprise, right? The old one is nearing its eight month birthday and thanks to the rapid Android aging process, it’s about as a relevant as a Handspring Visor at this point. But in all seriousness, does anyone care any more? I ask that with void of snark or sarcasm. I’m serious: Does anyone care about Honeycomb tablets anymore? Honeycomb was supposed to be the iOS killer. It was supposed to stand-up, challenge the mighty iOS and ultimately ...
Samsung Asks To Ban iPads, iPhones In The Netherlands

Samsung Asks To Ban iPads, iPhones In The Netherlands So remember that one time I said that Samsung was planning on stepping up its game against Apple? That was no joke. In the same court that granted an EU-wide injunction against three of its Galaxy smartphones , the Hague Court in the Netherlands, Samsung has asked that the iPhone and iPad get pulled from shelves. Rather than being based on design (like Apple’s GalTab injunction request), this complaint is based solely on 3G technology patents held by Samsung and is aimed specifically at the iPhone 3GS, ...
Bose SoundLink Mobile Passes On AirPlay For Bluetooth A2DP Streaming

Bose SoundLink Mobile Passes On AirPlay For Bluetooth A2DP Streaming Bose has a new toy for your desktop. The Soundlink Mobile builds on the company’s SoundDock pedigree but ditches the physical dock in favor for a bit of streaming magic. But no AirPlay here. Bose instead employs Bluetooth A2DP, which works with most Bluetooth-enabled devices rather than just the fruity ones. Awesome. The unit itself is about the size of a hardcover book and features a decidedly retro leather or nylon lid that folds back to double as a stand. A lithium-ion battery pack is said to ...
Rumor: Sprint Blacks Out Vacation Days In October To Prep For iPhone 5

Rumor: Sprint Blacks Out Vacation Days In October To Prep For iPhone 5 Oh, what’s this? Sprint is reportedly blacking out vacation days between September 30th and October 15th? For a “major phone launch”? Major phone launch. Early October (right when the iPhone 5 is likely to be launched.) Yeah, the rumor mill just caught on fire. Word of the blackout comes from Sprint Feed , who received the memo above from a source they’re confident enough in to refer to as a “beloved Super Spy”. Last time Sprint did this, it was for the launch of the Pre. That ...
Sony NEX-FS100 review
August 26, 2011 – 2:17 pm | No Comment
Sony NEX-FS100 review We've been uncommonly keen to get our hands on the Sony NEX-FS100 ever since we first heard about it back in March. You see, this is no ordinary camcorder. Its spec sheet reads like a liturgy of filmmakers' prayers: a large Super 35mm Exmor CMOS sensor, interchangeable lenses, XLR inputs and proper, professional controls. Sure, it comes with a $6,600 price tag to match, but it also heralds a trend that should ultimately benefit pros and ordinary gadget denizens alike: the ...
